I just removed mine...will drive it here in a bit and give my review. It should feel better, I never understood the point of the spring. I've actually done 5 speed swaps in 240's and it's never anything more than the pedal on the master cylinder...no spring of any sort. The clutch in those cars feels so much better than the G's so I have high hopes.

This mod is AWESOME. Honestly, it feels just like my 1995 maxima used to drive (with the exception of being stiffer and having shorter clutch takeup) which is to say awesome. Modulating the clutch pedal is so much easier! I won't say that lurching is a thing of the past because the clutch takeup is so short, but the feel is like what I am used. Intgr8r--thank you for this mod!!!

wooooow. This mod is definitely not for everyone. The stiffness is quite a bit greater and I'd say definitely don't do this if you do a lot of stop and go driving in traffic. It could wear you out with the added effort.

HOWEVER, the pedal is so progressive now. Previously, the spring made the pedal throw linear and consistent throughout the length. At the top of the throw it's compressed and gives you added strength, assisting you push. Towards the bottom, the spring minimizes its assistance and it's a very linear transition. I think this linear feel is what made it so difficult finding that mesh point of the clutch. The pedal isn't telling you when it's engaging, only the car moving is.

Now, it's progressive and it's stiffer towards the top of the push and lightens up significantly at the floor board. When you release, it's a light, quick jump back to the top and then stiffens up, right at the mesh point, letting you know when its engaging. This feedback is great but the increased stiffness takes some getting used to.

In addition, the throw feels significantly shorter now and the mesh point feels like it's RIGHT at the very top of the throw, so don't be surprised if that initial adjustment results in a bit of roasted clutch.

After getting a chance to drive it around all morning and get used to it I have two things to say:

1) I take back what I said about it being too stiff for stop and go. You get used to it and after just a day, I don't even notice that it's stiffer now.

2) This mod is badass. I can drive the car soooo much smoother. The wife was always making fun of me calling me a bad driver because this has been the hardest manual to drive smooth. The 'bouncy' feeling in the pedal at engagement is completely gone and there's no jerking. I always told her it was the car that was making it hard to drive and she wouldn't believe me. Now she does because it's smooth as butter. :-)

Yup, yup. I would encourage all 6MT to give this mod at least a try! For those of you who've owned a maxima in the past, it feels like a maxima with ACT heavy duty clutch/PP--stiff pedal, quick takeup. Again, Thank you Ian!!!

...........
I agree.
I think the reason for this is, the booster looses 'push' as the pedal goes down.
By the time it gets to the clutch engagement point it isn't doing much other than mask the feel.

....the more I drive with this mod, the more I love it.

^InTgr8r i usually dont say this to guys but... I LOVE YOUr mod!

WOW what a difference this makes, i was actually quite happy with the stock setup but man this is something. I cant even imagine going back to stock now!!

The clutch seems so much natural and predictable though it is weird to feel no reactive force of the spring when you are letting the clutch out but i WILL get used to it quickly, believe me!

Also as for the stiffness, i didnt feel any major increase iw ould say about 2-3% MAX.

Thanks again but how did you think of this anyways? Keep the DIY coming...

Just got around doing this mod. And I must say, I am impressed what a difference it made! The clutch is more predictable and feels like my friend's super chagered M3 (e46) stage 3 clutch (but not as heavy). I can now launch effortlessly at street lights with automatic cars without lurching... Thanks InTgr8r for sharing!!!

Thanks for the DIY. I have a 1st gen and I just checked to see if the pedal assemblies are similar. The 1st gen does have an assist spring like the one in OPs pics but is in a slightly different location (looks a little harder to reach). I'll give it a try to remove mine this weekend and see how it goes.

Yeah it looks more challenging in our 1st Gen.

Kudos Integr8r, great DIY! I took out the spring yesterday and now the clutch feel is much better, shifting smoother, and no more lurching out of 1st. Anyone with 6mt Gen 2won't be disappointed with this easy mod....now, if I can just minimize those jack rabbit starts, eh maybe not
