New 2008 G35S Owner / Aftermarket Intakes

Hey Guys.

This is only my second post here, but I have been lurking for a few months while I made my decision on what car to buy.

Well I finally broke down and bought a new 2008 G35S a couple of weeks ago... I was trying to hold out for the new 2009 G37S Sedan, but the deals on the '08's were just too good to pass up.

So far I'm loving the car, but I do wish I had the 7 spd auto from the 2009's. I guess you can't always get everything you want?!? LOL

Anyway, I am planning to get an aftermarket intake and was looking at the Injen and K&N systems, but I have been doing some research and some people are saying that you may actually LOSE power with these aftermarket systems. Does anyone here have any comments on this or experience / dyno tests on any of the aftermarket intakes on the V36 G Sedans?

Looking forward to eventually meeting some of the local SoCal members. I'm gonna try and make it to the Orange County meet on the 19th. Is this open to anyone with a G?

Also, how can I add a signature line to my profile? Sorry, I'm still a newbie here...

Later.

Adrian

congratulations on your new purchase man...it's a great feeling isn't it?

the aftermarket intake is such a touchy topic on the forums lately...most believe the intakes lose hp because of tadashi at technosquare...he recommends sticking with the stock intake for the flash...however, every dyno post of intakes i've seen for the most part give you power...to my recollection, most ppl are saying it makes you lose power from the TS reflash mod...i don't think i've ever seen actual dyno sheets showing the before and after of only the intake modification losing power...furthermore, i have seen dyno sheets of people losing power when doing the reflash with the aftermarket intakes...i will say this though, the sound you get from an aftermarket intake alone is worth the price of admission...in fact, i think ive gained power with my injen CAI in the 3500-5000 rpm range...it's totally up to you whether or not a few hundred dollars is worth the deep sound

as for your signature, go up top to USER CP-> edit signature

Thanks for all the great information. What you have said makes a lot more sense than just the aftermarket intakes cause you to lose power. My Dad has a 350Z and gained about 7 HP on a DynoJet from just the K&N intake and, like you said, the sounds when you floor it is amazing.

I'm probably gonna do a TechnoSquare reflash eventually, but that is probably at least a few months down the road atfer I do the headers, HFC's, and exhaust, so for now I will probably do an intake for starters.

Are you happy with your Injen? I love the looks of it, but I the K&N looks pretty nice and gives you much easier access to the filters for cleaning. Do you know if anyone on here has tried both intakes?

Thanks again for all the great info! Like I said before, I'm a G newbie, but I'm definitely not an import newbie. I have had several heavily modded imports with my first being a 1990 Eclipse GSX that I bought in 1991 and had for almost 10 years. It was pushing 450 WHP and running low 12's when I sold it. My Dad also has a heavily modded 1999 Eagle Talon TSI AWD, a 2002 Miata with a Kenny Bell supercharger, and a 2005 350Z Anniversary, plus a 2006 G35 Sedan as his everyday driver.

Well the K&N intakes are rather new so I'm not sure there are many people who has tried it yet, i know there are 2 threads on this forum talking about it right now. I've done a lot of reading on intakes both on here and myg37. From what i read, fujita's intakes give you a power gain when you first start your car but the heat soak kills all the power gains in 10 minutes and you actually lose power.
A lot of people right now are using jwt popchargers because they claim you get around the same amount of hp and torque gain as the injen but at a cheaper price, easier access to the filters and a much lower chance of hydrolock. They bashed the injen because when they did before and after dyno's on myg37 found there was only 2-3 hp gain with a full exhaust setup and they felt that the price to power ration was too low, I know people on stock setup s are getting around 8hp.

Whatever you decided to choose, it seems that most aftermarket intakes means less torque on the low end but more power on the high end. So worse driving around town but much better if you're pushing the car.

That's what I gathered so far so i'm still waiting for to pick an intake, i'm running stock without the silencers, so there is a nice growl when you push it too.

Thanks for the great input. I have already read the other posts regarding the K&N intake and the comments seem somewhat positive. I had not thought of hydrolock with the Ingen system, but with the filters down in the wheel wells like that, I guess it could be possible to saturate the filter when going through heavy standing water or a heavy downpour. Although, living in SoCal, we don't get much rain and if it does rain, I'll most likely be driving another car anyway.

I didn't realize that you could remove the silencers off the factory intake... I may just try that for now until I decide on a different intake. Have you read about any power gains from just pulling the silencers and adding a aftermarket drop-in air filters?

I think the injen intakes are pretty cool...especially since i got it for only 300 dollars. it was also fun getting intimate with the car...the front bumper was a hassle at first but once you do it, it's really easy the next time around...i don't think in our cars hydrolock is possible...because the corner of the bumpers act as cover for the front...and also, if you look under the car there isn't any open space for water to shoot up into that part of the car...i wouldn't worry about hydrolock, i've driven through puddles shooting water out the sides of the car without worries...i almost have to remind myself the sound i get from 3500 is not all my exhaust + hfc's lol

From what I know removing silencers give no benefits apart from sound, and I'm not sure about new filters too many split decisions on that. You also have to remember with Injen you will end up with a smaller washer fluid container and you have to move your horn. Since you're in Socal i dont' think it really matters but here in Wisconsin i need the washer fluid for the winter months. It all really depends on you.

Btw with no silencers still doesn't' compare to what a real CAI would sound like but it's a step up from stock.

^^, csquared has some good information here. The washer fluid container is smaller and its a bit of a pain to do all of this...but at the same time, i haven't replaced the fluids in a while...probably since march or so

Hehe. Yeah, I'm not too worried about relocating the horn or having a smaller washer fluid reservoir cosidering the only time I use my window washer fluid is to clean the dust off my windshield when I get into my truck in the moning... and the G is garaged, so I don't even have that to worry about that with the G. LOL

I used to live in the Chicago area, and went to school in Cincinnati, so I know what your talking about in the Winter months... but thankfully I don't have to deal with that kind of crappy weather anymore.

I think I will most likely go with the Injen intake, but I will probably wait a few weeks first and see if there are any more comments on the new K&N system first.

Thanks again for the input.

I really like the JWT, but the K&N just looks better and I like the filter design more. I want to try the K&N but already spent too much on intakes to go buy a third. The Stillen I'll sell for cheap, the JWT no way for cheap because it's what I have on my car now and I like it. I wouldn't sell the JWT for less than $250 and that's only if I sold my Stillen too so I could buy the K&N intake.
