Rough Transmission shifts from 2 to 3
After reading this do you guys think that we're damaging it through playing around and shifting in manual mode? So like if we go manual a lot do you think we are shortening the lifespan of the tranny?
You know mine does this too, BUT it's based on throttle position, for me at least it is. Lets say If I WOT it in 2nd and shift to 3rd at the red-line then I'll get a slight thud from the transmission.
Now if I nearly WOT (but not fully) then shift to 3rd at the red-line and as its shifting I'll WOT (i.e. Fully press the throttle down) all the way down then it'll shift perfectly with no harsh transmission thuds.
Now if I don't WOT or partially and then shift to 3rd as I'm either keeping the same throttle position or less then this is when I get the so called "harsh" transmission shift.
Play around with throttle position and gear changes, it makes a world of a difference. Whenever I have a friend drive my car for the first time they nearly always end up jerking the car like no tomorrow because they do not expect the transmission to buck like that. But then again if you WOT it in 2nd and shift to 3rd at a lesser throttle then you're bound to get transmission thuds.

Infiniti has replaced the valve body in the tranny when I complained about this harsh shift into 3rd, mostly in manual mode. It is better, but not as good as the sifting up and down into other gears. It seems worse when cold, but it's still THERE even as it warms up. I think others are right here, play with the throttle. It's probably a "quirk' that is intrinsic to this electronic Tranny....
Hi,
I have a 2007 G35X which has the same problem when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Someone asked about how violent the shift is, I describe it as being rear-ended. When I rev mine up and shift from 2nd-3rd it will actually feels like someone kicked the back of my chair. I have been to the dealership several times and nothing has ever been found. I am going in tomorrow for the VDC/Slip light problem and I am going to take a tech out for a test drive. I'll keep you posted.

You don't happen to remember where you found that clutch pack post, do you?
stevester: I had that hard - too hard - shift to 3rd in manual mode primarliy. It seemed to get worse this winter. Also had the TSB 028 applied last year. My dealer confirmed the "hard shift", replaced the Valve body in the tranny, and it's much better. Still not as smooth as other shifts, you smooth but with firmness, but better. Had it done about 2 months ago. It was warranty work, so who knows if it Really was necessary. I've got 17k miles on the clock.
jcrayamsterdam, my car did this the other day for the first time after I was having some possible battery issues with my car. I haven't pushed my car hard since it did the first time, but I will be changing out my battery today with either an Optima yellow top or Odyssey battery and then see if there are any issues. My mechanic told me that these car need good batteries especially when under load. I've had my stock battery for about three years now, so I figure it's time for an upgrade. BTW I have a transgo shift kit, and I have it for about six months now with zero issues until the weird shift the other day. I don't think it was the Transgo kit though. I'll keep you posted.
@ Mkai0, how do you describe the shift?
@ thescreensavers, it really feels just like what stevester describes.
1- it feels like you just got rear ended, it isn't a bullet shift, it's jarring.
2- in my case it only happens when it's really cold outside. Once the transmission warms up (not the engine), it goes away.

lol, I have been rear ended and it does not feel like that at all :O
It just feels like a rough shift. I am 100% used to it now. I always get it when rolling out from school, COLD. I never pay attention when it happens but I need to see if it happens when the tranny is warm.
