Ate the serpentine belt at 11K

On the way home from work the other night the G ate its serpentine belt. The BRAKE and charge lights lit up and I lost power steering. I was less than a mile from home, so I limped it there. When I popped the hood, the belt was in shreds. I only have 11,500 miles on the car.

Infiniti roadside towed it to the dealer where they replaced the belt (my overall service experience was less than good, but that's a separate topic). They didn't find anything else wrong with it that would make it eat the belt, so most likely it was just defective. At least I hope it was just a defective belt

are our water pumps electric? i hope so bc you could have run into problems if it wasnt getting coolant. it had to be a defective belt, esp if they coulndt find anything wrong with the tracking on your pullies.

I've been seeing the belts on these cars fraying at quite low mileage.

not sure whats been causing this. I feel they engineered the tolerances too tight with the new setup. the v36 uses only one automatic tensioner, no manual ones.

I usually see the side closest to the block with one or two cords missing. they can usually be found still on the vehicle, wrapped up in accessories. I've been told that the cords can wedge up into the crank pulley, destroying the front main seal. yikes.

no bulletin yet.

30K is the recommended interval for replacement if I remember correctly.
I'm overdue.

Still not sure if I'm doing it myself or if I feel like being financially raped at the dealer.

Hey, has anyone replaced their own belt?
If it's like past cars I've had, it can't be to tough... right?

not bad. the auto tensioner is 1/2 or 3/8 square drive, cant recall right now. you need a breaker bar slim enough to get in between the fan shroud.

you will be working under the car. pretty easy.
