Help! Trouble installing Hi-flow Kinetix Cats

All:

Hi, I've been a lurker for a while and decided to start mods with a set of cats.

I have tried every combination of wrenches I have and can't get an angle on the top bolt for the header to cat connection on the top driver's side.

Does anyone have any tips or clues I can't think of to help me get this bi*ch out?

Thanks in advance

Well, you know someone will say this but "the search button is your best friend".

What cat did you get? FI, Berk...

Having said that, take a look at this thread. Lots of good advice and links to othr advice. That top driver side nut is the beast of the removal process from what I have heard. Basically you gotta attack from the top and use two wobble extensions or something similar. You will need at least 24" of extension. Use a good penetrating oil. Be very careful around the O2 sensors because some people have broken them in the process of removing the cat. This is what I have read but I haven't done it yet myself. I will attempt in about a month...I guess after seeing how it goes for you

Good luck. let us know how it went.

I took mine to a shop and let them do it for about $100. That bolt is a b*tch and it just wasn't worth dealing with.

Thanks.

I bought kinetix, but the bolt is part of the original cat installation.

It might be too late, but I got the first difficult bolt out from top using lots of extensions, and I got the second difficult bolt out from the bottom by placing my wrench through the wheel well near the lower control arm.

I hope that helps anyone in the future

Thanks for the additional advice. I am considering the mod myself but that second nut that you got through the wheel well was worrying me a little and I was guessing that the wheel well might be possible. Glad to hear that someone else got it to work. Did you use a breaker bar or a impact wrench?

Thanks again.

a wrench with pipe over it

my impact wouldnt even work on those rusted bolts unless i doused them in one of those liquid wrench sprays

Just like Neal376 said, but you can get to both of these from the top. You shouldnt have to remove anything from the engine compartment to do this. All you need is a half inch set up, they are tight and you will break smaller ratchet set ups if you use them.

If you look down the side of the engine you will see the bolt that your looking for. The nut is on the top of the flange. Take your half in ratchet/breaker bar, long a$$ half inch extension (maybe 2) and your half inch 14mm (I think) socket and go to town. I would suggest a nice dose of PB Blaster about an hour before trying this too.

Hope that helps!

Don't worry if you snap the top flange bolt. Kinetix cats should provide new bolts, so don't worry about snapping the bolts.
