Engine whine

2007 g35 with auto transmission. Just north of 60000 on the odo, it developed a whining, almost turbine-like sound that starts about 2600-2700 RPM, gets worst about 3000-3200, then tapers off by 3800. The sound seems to come from directly in front of me when driving. This happens in all gears, though not when sitting in park. At this point, there is no loss of power or other unusual behavior, but it is concerning. Fluids have all been changed since this started, but the sound was unaffected Has anyone a clue what it may be?

Thanks,
Shawn

I think we both have the same problem here. Mines has 55k miles. Think it might be the serpentine belt that's causing the noise. Have you replaced yours yet?

Get that check out, check your battery and your alternator. I had a whine and took it into my dealer and they managed to drop my tranny. Check your voltage is your gears seem like they are dumping into gear

Still puzzled.

It is possible it is the serpentine belt, but it is not the usual high-pitched squeal I normally associate with such things. I have just had the charging system checked r/t a dead battery issue (was just an old battery, that barely met specs by the time I made it to the shop 20 min away). I have seen something online about VQ engine whine caused by bad timing chain tension wheel or guides. Hope that is not it!
I will probably just take it to the dealer next week. If it is drivetrain it should still be covered under the 72mo/70k mi drivetrain warranty. Thanks again.

I doubt it's gonna be the engine. If it was, you would'be been hearing it even in park with the car on. Only happens when you accelerate right? Take off your foot from the gas pedal and at that moment do you hear the whine stop? It's gotta be some pulley or the belt. What i can do is lift the rear and put the car in drive and once and for all figure out what the hell is that noise lol.

Hope you find out because my '05 Max started making the same sound around 70k miles. It now has 80k miles.

whine

I does sound something like a s/c whine, just at a much lower volume (though I wish that was the true cause ). When I have tried to record it, it is drowned out by road/wind noise. The sound does exist whether I am going up or down the rev range, with the same start/stop points. Just thinking, it may go higher, but by 3800-4000 RPM the normal engine sound may be loud enough drown it out.

I had the SAME exact thing! I ended up taking it to infiniti and they manage to blow my tranny because my battery wasn't putting out the correct voltage. The whine is most likely from your alternator trying to charge your battery or the alternator is going. Be careful driving especially if you have a 5AT because your tranny will not be shifting right and you could end up destroying it. I had this sound took it to infiniti and they managed to do it. Does the whine get louder or show up at lower RPMS when everything is on (heating, lights, music etc)?

No it peaks at 3000-3200 regardless of what electrics are running. In fact, if I have the radio above a minimal volume (3-4 pips on the scale), I can't even hear it. It is very perplexing.

Sorry to bump this old post but I believe I'm having the same problem. I drive an 08 X with just over 60K.

In cold conditions I get a "whining" sound, similar to a supercharger type noise, but defiantly not like a squeaky serpentine belt. To me the car feels a little sluggish, when this is happening either. When I drive the car for a bit the noise seems to go away and everything feels normal.

If anyone has any insight or knows of another thread I can reference that'd be super.

I was getting this sound and then I replaced my plenum gasket and now it doesn't happen anymore. Think it could be that or maybe a loose vacuum hose?
