I wonder if the reason it is a relatively small drive (30GB) is that whatever OS they are using can only support a maximum partition size of 32GB. So, you may theoretically be able to pull out the HD, and use ghost or dd to copy it to a new, larger disk. But, you might not actually be able to get much more usable space.

Someone will try it eventually.... I don't have nav so it won't be me.
that's what i said on page 1. plus, the extreme environment drives are more pricey than your typical home-use drive. i think there's a bit of a price difference between the 30G and 80G model, which is the next in the line.

i'd say if the OS can recognize more than 30G, purchasing the 80G would be a very worthwile mod for increased music box capacity. of course, it would be a pain to fill 60G worth of music from single CDs. this would be most practical if a way was found to hook up to a PC and upload music directly.

I am confused, I thought the hard drive that came with the Inifniti was 9.3 GB? What's with all this talk about 30 GB?

Nav system data and all that uses the same drive, which is why we get just a 9.3G partition for music.

The next largest in the Seagate series is a 40G, which wasn't available yet in fall of '06. Hitachi has the Endurastar line that goes up to 50G for automotive, but I don't think anybody makes an 80G for automotive use yet.

If it turns out that swapping out and ghosting a drive isn't a big deal, ordinary 2.5" pata laptop drives are electrically identical. They may (or may not) die fairly quickly, but they can give us 120G in the meantime for about $70.

Sorry... Been busy with work. I'm planning to do it tomorrow, but I still have other things on my plate. Gotta swap out the fogs on my Benz and have a few other things to do with the G.

If I have a chance tomorrow I'll take the nav unit back out, remove all the little screws and see what the deal is with the hard drive. I know it's wider than a laptop drive, so it's probably on rails or something.

I'll see and report back.

What's the latest on this, can we put a larger drive in this thing or not? This is influencing my decision on whether to get the nav/music box package.

Any updates? Anyone found a way to get MP3s directly on the HD?

there was another thread about this a while ago, and I thought someone figured out that the OS on the nav system uses QNX. If so, there aren't any freely available stable implementations of the QNX filesystem, so unless you have access to a QNX system for mounting and manipulating the drive, good luck .

Edit: found it. https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sedan-v36-2007-08/162734-qnx-os-used-g.html
That's the thread where someone found an article about gracenote's software supporting QNX, and some possible comments in the article alluding to Nissan using this software and thus using QNX as their OS.

hmmm ....

Seems to me I have on old QNX OS to run on my (even older) Amiga. But I don't imagine that would be of much use really.

QNX appears to have gone open source and has a version of the OS available for Windows. If the G uses this OS, I assume some clever soul could find a way to read the hard drive.

I would love to know if someone ran with this project and possibly found a way to do a custom UI while still maintaining all the functionality of the stock UI.
