Can I change oil filter size?

I just changed my oil myself (the removal of the plastic rock guard is a pain about 12 bolts ) and noticed that the oil filter is extremely small. Can I change to a larger one if the threads fit? there seems to be enough space there.

I am going to say yes - i have done it multiple times. I think i used a oil filter from a 4.0L VQ pathfinder and it is a little bit bigger. You will just have to put in that much more oil.

If it fits, then go for it.

The only problem you may run into is the pressure it takes for the bypass valve. If it is higher than the smaller filter you could have a problem if it's needed.
