Removal of 6mt Shift ****?

I just purchased a new shift **** – the metal strip on OEM kills me (freezing in winter, blistering in summer) at any rate, is it simply turning it (left to loosen) or is there a screw I need to undo? For the life of me I can not twist this thing off, and I’m afraid I’ll break it if I twist any harder… Please Assist.

Someone did a DYI on this here. As I remember you must loosen the shifter boot and pull it up to get a pair of vice grips on the shaft. Then you use one of the belt grip wrenches around the BASE of the stock **** to unscrew it. It's real hard to unscrew. I think the trim ring around the boot will pop loose if you pull it from the bottom and around it.

Thanks for the advice. I called the dealer and the service guy said you REALLY got to use some force.

Hello,

I have removed a few of these, and all I can say is do not plan on keeping/re-using it, and vice grips. It takes a whole hell of alot of force to get it off. Practically feels like your gonna break something.

My dealer stripped the leather removing mine - he said the must have put a seal or something. Anyways, the good thing is that the replacement was just screwed one - so it is easy to remove.

Put a towel over the shift **** and use vice grips and twist left. should come off after a few turns.

Took mine to dealer after attempting the method outlined on this site by immobilizing the shaft after pulling up the boot and failing because it was on too damn tight. The guy at the dealer used to be a boxer and just twisted it right off (and screwed my new one right on for free). He said that the shaft did not need immobilizing, and I think he was right, as I put some tape on the shaft as a reference during my failed attempt and it was in the same exact place with my new **** on when I got home and removed boot again - it did not turn at all. Just twist HARD.

Don't use vice grips, it will chew the sh#t out of it. My tech used a leather belt and a short lever to twist the **** off in one smooth motion.

GL.. It's such a PITA just for a stupid ****. But piece of mind knowing that you did it correctly is worth it. Two people are necessary...

I was talking about the shaft. If your into that you can use vice grips on your shaft.

you have to twist the OEM shift **** with a pair of pliers while holding the shaft underneath tightly with a vice grip. Use a rubber hose to protect the shift ****
maybe this will help...

When I sent my car into the dealer for the (recall) Clutch - I had them do it (replace shift-****) for me. They said ...Not a problem, no charge. Long story short - 4 days later and $350.00 at the dealers’ expense (replace shift rod / linkage snapped when mech used wrench) I have my new shift **** on. Nissan decided to use thread-lock when installing the ****... Very happy with my new **** =)
