grinding 6th gear
i dont know how many of you 6mt guys out there have run into this. i searched but didnt really find a good match. maybe i just overlooked it. i have an 08 with 10300 mi on it and about a week ago i noticed when skipping a shift, like going from 2-4-6, when shifting to 6th gear i get a terrible sounding grind. if i take my time and coast in neutral for a couple seconds then shift its ok. but if i shift normally its terrible. i wanted to test to see if it would happen any other time and noticed if i hold the clutch in, put it in 3rd gear, keep the clutch in and shift to 6th, gut wrenching grind again. im taking it to the dealer tuesday. i dont want to hear from them its the way i shift. i think 6th synchros are bad. anyone else with a 07+ have this experience?

I just recently had that exact same problem with my 06 6mt about 2 months ago it would grind if you skipped to 6th from any gear other than 5th even when with the clutch pedal to the floor. I thought it was just me getting too comfortable driving it, but it was definitely the tranny. I took it to crossroads infiniti in raleigh, nc. They said they couldnt reproduce the problem but they would replace the whole tranny and my recalled headlights, they gave me a loaner 07 4 dr G and I came back a few days later. I didnt have to pay one cent, I recieved the best customer service i've ever gotten at any dealership. The people at the service department there are great!

thanks for the response dauntlessg. so chris, dont you think if skipping shifts were to cause a problem the manufacturer would eliminate the ability to skip a shift? your comment is rediculous. thats almost like saying if my car rattles over bumps, dont hit a bump, that will solve your problem. youre missing the point. if im not doing anything outrageous with the shifting i should be able to shift how i want

mine does in when skipping into 5th, i've learned to avoid it, i'm pretty sure the syncros aren't lining up properly, i've noticed its only when its at a high RPM like 6000 in 2nd then going to 5th, it will make the noise and wont shift to 5th, even though you are going to let out the clutch at the proper RPM

I am surprised that the syncros are already gone on your car, are you hard on it when shifting?
How can they limit skip shifting? It can't be done, it is not an auto transmission, don't get offended all I said is that is what the gears are for use them. The only way I would even consider going from 2nd to 4th, is if I was driving the car in heavy snow.
If you skip from 2nd to 4th it can be done but remember you are not driving a torque monster like a Corvette or Viper where it can turn higher gears at any rpm, just b/c you can do it does not mean it is good for the transmission.
