I think that a 2500 mile oil change isn't totally out of the question if the owner experiences harsh driving conditions (lot of stop/go traffic, etc).

Besides, it's "cheap" insurance anyway.

Even in stop and go NYC traffic 2500 miles on Amsoil, Mobil 1 EP and Redline is a waste of money. Jiffy Lube has branded the 3000 mile oil change in everyones mind. I admittedly was of the same mindset until I started using Amsoil in 94. I went 5k, 10k, 15k and so on until oil analysis showed it needed to be changed. Each car/engine is different so your mileage may vary, but 10k is conservative for the synthetics mentioned above unless you have a turbo'd or supercharged car. The only way most people can put their mind at ease is to get the oil analysis done a couple times. I know I was shocked to see how much money I was wasting.

That's the only true way to know, and I agree, changing oil frequently if you're using a good synthetic like Amsoil is a waste. I change mine every 10,000 km or about 6200 miles. Amsoil literature says you can go as long as 25,000 miles if you are not driving in severe conditions. Not sure I'd be so brave, but it makes me think 10k is quite safe.

With longer intervals remember to change the filter at normal intervals.

...they still become used at the normal rate.

Yea I now they bench test these now but they dont run them that long and there is no load on them as they are not in the car yet.. So to wait till 3000 or even 3500 miles is nuts to me. Maybe I really baby my car but I would never wait that long. Just my .02
This isn't 1960. You're wasting oil and money, which is very unfortunate. First oil change at 3750 as the manufacturer recommends. I made the switch over to synthetic at that point and haven't looked back.

I change my oil every 3750-4500 miles.

They say synthetic oil (depending on your driving habits/conditions) can last for much longer than that, which may be true, but the oil filter on these cars are awfully tiny. I know its only a 3.5L engine but Jesus...it looks like it belongs on a lawn mower.

Its funny how so many people are so paranoid about these things like its some sorta fragile piece of equipment. You all do realize these engines are beaten pretty hard in testing before they're installed in the car?

I've always thought "break in" procedures were a bit weird too. It seems like every manufacturer has a different break in method. Hell, the first thing they do when they test an assembled car is redline it.

I never really "broke in" my car. Well, unless you consider taking it down a windy road the second I bought it as "breaking in".

Modern engines that are built well can take a beating...its what they were made for.

Changed mine w/dino oil at 1000 mi.
changed w/dino oil again at 3750.
Then sythetic since 7500. Castrol Syntec 0W30 European spec. Change every 7500 miles whether she needs it or not. Mobil 1 M108 filter.
38k miles now, no oil use between changes (nor would I expect any at this mileage) or other detectable issues.
