First Oil Change

I know this topic has been visited, as I've searched many prior threads...but what is the general consensus as to the first oil change? Should I change the oil at 1K miles or wait until 3K miles? Should I do synthetic on my first oil change or wait until my 2nd oil change?

Thanks.

Do the first oil change anywhere from 2300-5000 miles. Going to synthetic then isn't a problem.

I've done a lot of research on oil and break-in, as i'm sure many here have. I just did my first OC at 3500 and switched to synthetic. Break-in on these, and most modern motors, happens very early in their hopefully long lives. I drive alot, as this 3500 miles ticked by just a month after I bought the car, so I'm setting up for 7500 mile intervals.

From: Waltham Ma,
YIKES first oil change at 3500!! I do my oil changes at 2000-2500 and always use synthetic. My first oil change is at 1000, 1200 at the most. IMO you should always do your first at 1000 miles to get rid of any metal pieces that may have worn of the internal parts. Yea I now they bench test these now but they dont run them that long and there is no load on them as they are not in the car yet.. So to wait till 3000 or even 3500 miles is nuts to me. Maybe I really baby my car but I would never wait that long. Just my .02

What does everyone think about switching to synthetic at around 10-15K miles? (i.e., doing a dino oil change at 1,000 miles, 3,000 miles, and then every 3,000 miles thereafter until around 10-15K and then switch to synthetic)??

BMW uses full synthetic from day one. Switching to synthetic isn't a problem. Worst "problem" with switching to synthetic is a slower breakin.

You're fine. Just don't go back to dino after using synthetic.

Listen, you can do it immediately at the first oil change or wait. Some folks think that the G's engine doesn't fully break-in till 15K miles. I personally changed it to synthetic at 2300 miles.. As I posted, there are a number of car mfr's that have synthetic at factory fill...

If you are to ask me how many miles "are too many miles" to go to synthetic, I'd say 30K miles, as a number out of the air..

Whatever you do, once you go to synthetic, don't go back to dino.

Don't think too hard.. Just do it..

Infiniti says either 3750 or 7500 depending on the service schedule you follow. I think they know more about their cars then the rest of us do. My previous G35 (2003) had it's first oil change at 7500 and I continued to follow schedule 2 (every 7500). I just traded that G in after 6 years and 103,000 miles and no problems at all. Right now I have about 800 miles to go until I get to 3750. I think I will take it to the dealer for an oil change then since I have a coupon for a free oil change. But, I do plan to follow schedule 2 (every 7500) after the first two oil changes (3750 and 7500).

It's not going to hurt anything by switching to synthetic now. However, VQ35 engines seem to show wear metals up to the 15k mark. By switching to synthetic earlier you will prolong the breakin period. That's not a bad thing and quite honestly I wouldn't worry about it. As far as drain intervals another poster mentioned 2000-2500 mile change intervals on synthetic, well that is extremely wasteful. Good synthetic oils such as Mobil 1 EP and Amsoil are good for at LEAST 10k unless you are autox'ing. To be honest the VQ engines are good for 15k with these oils.

A dealer today recommended that I do the first change at the recommended interval of 3750. They also said switching to synthetic was fine at 3750, but might be more beneficial in waiting until I reach 10-15K miles. The dealer also said changing the oil at a time before 3750 was completely unnecessary. If the dealer themselves recommend to follow the service manual, I can't imagine it is truly that beneficial or even necessary to do the first change before 3750........my .02

I agree. However, what is necessary to appease one's mind may not be the same as what's actually necessary in reality.

If I only drove on the weekends that would work, but as much as I love poking around the dealership, and working on cars, I'd be doing it all the time with the amount of miles I drive. I've racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on vehicles with synthetic 7500 mile schedules. I've never had any internal motor issues. I respect those who change oil all the time. In fact, I'd love to buy a car from you guys some day cause it certainly can't hurt to change too much. As far as break-in goes, just do what you feel comfortable with. I'm sure my right foot will cause more damage to this car than any oil change schedule, but I'm confident the G is up to the challenge.
