Synthetic Oil

Hey guys,
I am approaching my 5th oil change at 18,750 miles. What kind/brand of synthetic oils do you guys use in your 07+ G35 Sedans?

I use Castrol Syntec.
I used Mobil 1, Valvoline, etc. I seem to have the best results with Castrol.

I just put in Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30. There is a lot of debate regarding different types of synthetic oils.. some swear by some (i.e. work better in VQ engine), others by others (experience, anecdotal evidence) - but IMO the differences aren't hugely significant between the better known brands. Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, Amsoil, Valvoline, Pennzoil and even Quaker State synthetic are all better than conventional.

+1.

The Pep Boys deal of 5 qts of PP 5w-30 + 1 PureONe filter for $27 is a pretty good deal.

I think as long as you're using synthetic grade oil for a naturally aspirated engine it doesn't matter too much.

Oil quality may come into play if you are turbocharged. I have a 08 Legacy 2.5GT and from the Legacy forums, the engine is more sensitive to oil based on Used Oil Analyses. Those who have sent their oil in to be analyzed say that M1 5w-30 instantly shears down to a 5w-20 and does not provide adequate protection in a turbocharged engine (due to heat). They recommended M1 0w-40. M1 tends to be a thinner oil. PP is a thicker oil and doesn't shear down to a 20w.

I'm sure this won't be a problem in the VQ35HR. It seems to be okay to go up 1 level of viscosity in engines though. 0w-40 or a 5w-40 is okay to use.

I used M1 5w-30 at my first oil change, at roughly 2400 miles. Today, at 6400 miles I put in Castrol Syntec 0w-30 (GC).

I've used Amsoil with great results (sample testing) for many years.
....just in the process of restocking.

- ASL 5W-30 for the engine.
- MTG 75W-90 for the 6MT
- SVG 75W-90 for the rear diff.

You could have changed to synthetic oil long time ago. I've been using
Mobil 1 for years without any issues. WallMart sells Mobil 1 at a resonable
price. As long as you're going first class don't forget to use their oil filters
too.

Since I'm a dealer, of course I use the Amsoil ASL 5W-30, and will be going with the gear lube for my diff soon.

Go straight to full synthetic, no transition oil is required. And use a good quality oil filter like a Wix or Amsoil, not a Fram.
