Why is it possible to shift from D to N while driving?

My car is automatic so sometimes i'd like to use M to shift. But couple of times I incorrectly thought i was in M mode so i shifted. It went to N which caused high revving. Why shouldn't it require you to push the **** in order to move to N?

What happens if it had shifted all the way to R (i don't think it is possible since you'd have to push the **** and brake, i hope).

You can usually shift most autos to neutral without depressing the ****, but you must depress it to go to reverse. It is a safety feature. On older cars if you were braking on ice etc. and you started to skid sideways a bit, then you would slam the shifter to neutral and your skid would straighten out while on the brakes. This has saved my butt a few times by doing this.

^^^^

Yea, ive hit the shifter into neutral at times when i needed to brake all of a sudden. Sometimes i'll try to downshift really quickly with the paddle shifter to engine brake, but if i cant get to the paddle in time hitting the shifter into neutral def allows the car to brake quicker.

Whatever you do, do NOT hold the shifter button and move the shifter upto R when you car is moving forward. It WILL go into reverse and probably ruin your tranny.

I almost ruined mine.

I think this more then anything is why you don't have to hold the button to go into N. The chances of accidentally going into R are too high.

I could've sworn i saw an episode of the Mythbusters and they pretty much concluded that this was not an issue. Most, if not all, vehicles made after 1980 are electronically controlled to prevent the transmission from going into reverse when you're moving forward. The gear lever will go into the "R" slot but it won't do anything at the transmission level. You will get a code, however. They tested it on auto and manual equipped vehicles.

^^^^^sweet, you will have to go out in your ride tonight and try that out
If something blows you can get Mythbusters to cover it.
