Infrared thermometer + Driving = Fun

I was playing with the thermometer these past few days, documenting brake temperatures as i go about my daily driving and found a few interesting things.

- Normal street driving, with a few stops from 40mph will bring rotor temperatures up to 120 degrees, on an 80 degree day.

- A couple of high speed stops, from 60-70mph, will bring a rotor from a resting temperature of +/- 75 degrees to upwards of 200+ degrees. However, after just a few minutes of freeway driving, the temperature goes down significantly.

- There is a variance of roughly 20 degrees from the edge of the rotor (vanes) to the hub. The hub being the warmest (obviously). And the backing plates of the pads are hotter still, by about 30 degrees.

These are not scientific measurements, of course. I was merely playing with the thermometer and didn't even try to normalize the variables in each situation. But they are fun to note.

I did figure out though, that there are some street/track combi pads that i should never get for my type of daily driving due to the minimal temperature required to get them to work optimally.

If you want to test the limits of your thermometer, measure your exhaust manifold immediately after driving on the freeway. You might make it to 4 digits.

I might just do that!

I also used it to measure external temperature on our roast the other night. Not that it matters.

i would be interested in seeing the differences in stock rotors and a 2 piece rotors temperatures. do they have those available for our cars(or the g37sport brakes)?
