Auto Headlights ON delay
Auto Headlights ON delay
So most people agree that they are annoyed with their auto headlights coming on and turning off briefly, being placed in a weird sequence on the switch lever, and not having the option of being completely disabled. But has anyone actually done anything to remedy this?
I always run my lights on manual, even though I don't like the fact that they don't turn off with ignition, like they do on several other cars.
I read a suggestion that the dash sensor(s) can simply be unplugged. Has anyone done this with any success?
Another idea that came to mind was having a delay added so that it takes more than a billionth of a second for them to turn on when going from off to auto to parking lights and finally to manual. This would eliminate the flicker of the lights as one rotates the switch past the auto position when turning them on and off.
I don't have a service manual, but perhaps someone who has one can chime in with some ideas. Is there a single relay that both, auto and manual lghts are ran through? Having to wait half a second for the manual lights to come on as a result of the added delay (if auto lights can't be delayed separately) would be a small price to pay, I guess. But losing the ability to have the high beams come on instantly when flashing with the lights from the off position would be unacceptable.
Just thinking out loud here.
Any comments and/or suggestions are welcome.

I am bit confused but just in case (if) you are not aware, there are 2 settings through your center screen under "Settings->Convenience" i think where you can change the delay time for shut off after turning ignition off, i have mine at 0s so the shut off as soon as i leave the car second there is an option for auto light sensor sensitivity, that i have turned to least sensitive which i believe is all the way left (else trial and error) and my auto dont come off when im passing under a small underpass or bridge at day time, as long as there is some light (but no direct sun) my lights dont turn on.
Hope this helps, else pulling the sensor wire should work for sure if you want to rid of this feature.

I don't mind them turning off on their own when used at night. My delay is set to 0 seconds, so that the lights turn off once I close the door after getting out of the car. What I'm trying to avoid is having the lights come on and then turn right back off when I turn the selector switch past the auto setting early in the morning. I turn the selector all the way to manual. If I keep the switch in auto, the lights come on initially, but usually turn off once I'm facing the sun as I exit my street. Then they turn back on for a few seconds when I pass under a bridge and turn right back off. I don't like them doing this several times during my relatively short commute to work every morning.
Also, when I leave work it's still pretty bright outside so I can turn the selector past the auto mode without tripping the lights. But once I pull into the garage and go to turn the lights off, it is dark enough for the auto lights to flash back on when the switch is being returned back to the off position.
I guess I could turn the lights off after turning the engine off, and turn the light switch to the parking lamps position before starting the engine in the morning. Honestly though, I think that's a bit too much of a hassle so I just continue being annoyed by them day in and day out for the time being.

My car has navi. I'm not sure if the non navi menu includes this in the comfort and convenience settings, or whether there even is an option for comfort and convenience settings in the menu.
Just an update to this...
leaving the sensor unplugged reverts the system to night mode and the lights stay on. The problem is they do not turn off after the ignition is placed in the off position. So, I kept it simple and covered the inside of the sensor housing with black felt tape with adhesive back. Now the lights stay on for as long as the switch is in the auto position no matter how bright it is outside, and turn off as soon as I close the door after getting out of the car. The delay time in the comfort and convenience settings is set to 0 sec and the headlight sensitivity setting is now irrelevant.

But I am a v35 coupe though. Not sure how you fancy v36 guys work with your computers :P
This is exactly why I bypassed mine. There is simply not enough range in the sensitivity settings. My lights would come on in the garage, then would turn off as I exited, then would come back on under an underpass then would turn back off. Not only was it annoying it was distracting as my cluster and navi screen would also switch back and forth from night time and back.
I've had no problems with the lights since I've done this. I do feel the need to reach up and turn them on manually on occasion, but I'm sure that lingering habit will soon go away.
