My Plates were stolen!

Those of you in the bay area, be advised that lic. plates are being stolen off high end vehicles with 2005 reg. like our as of recently. The cops said the rate is really high. If you see mine 5ATW246 and its not on a Silver G35 then you found the a$$hole who stole mine. Now I can't drive it until tues at best have to get new plates at the DMV.

Re: My Plates were stolen!

I've had just the registration sticker with the year stolen from me before as well. Didn't notice until a cop wanted to give me a ticket for expired registration. I showed him the registration slip. He told me in the future to <font color=red>slash the registration sticker</font color=red> a bunch of time with a razor once you stick it on. That way a thief will only get a small bit of it before it falls apart. I do that all the time now.

Re: My Plates were stolen!

You shouldn't have any problem driving that I can see.. It sounds like you made a police report so hopefully you got some kind of receipt for it.. either way if you got pulled over for no plates they could verify through your VIN that the license plates to your vehicle were reported stolen..

lest they told you differently at the PD?

Thiefdo's usually just steal them for the year sticker then chuck your plate. I usually cut my sticker into thirds then when I apply it I leave about 1/16" between the pieces. It's just a deterent. You can also change your bolts to an allen head. Anything you can do to make stealing your plate unattactive so that they move on to the next victim and leave your ride alone.

Re: My Plates were stolen!

Here in L.A. they just use tin snips and take the right side (about two letters worth) of your plate.

We just got a ticket at the Brea Mall on the mini-van. No month sticker and wrong year displayed. Forgot to cut the new ones....guys must have had a portable heat gun or something?! Cop knew that we had proper registration...but he gave me a ticket anyway.

Cop: "It's a fix it ticket, sir."
Me: "Oh, in that case...THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH OFFICER!"

$10 fine ($24 if you don't correct it) to Brea and a trip to the DMV for new tags $15. They give you 21 days to fix it.

Re: My Plates were stolen!

I cut my tags as well-year and month but it sems wierd-no one in my court saw anything or had anything happen to them. Cops were very helpful to a point. Her advice to me was don;t drive until you are going to DMV. So it has sat in the drive way. I think I might use my Mr. Clean car wash thing on it...I'm bored without her.

Hrmm.. thats kinda bad advice dont drive till you get them replaced.. If you have some proof you made a police report -like a receipt they typically give out you should be a-ok driving it around. just keep that receipt with you and show to anyone who pulls you over.. if not worst they could do is cite you 5200vc for not displaying plates.. but thats a fixit and would be waived at court when you got new ones

Re: My Plates were stolen!

This is already a pain in the a$$ so I don't really want to get a fix it. The info given to me by PD was simply a case number. I asked if she would fax me something more offical but she stated it was not necessay as it was in the data base for the plate and VIN. I said if that is the case they have no grounds to pull me over and she chuckled and she said: "In theory yes but they can any way" My thought WTF if they know why hassle so I parked her all weekend. Its monday and I am driving her but DMV is not open today so I wait until tues. The joy of theives.
