Favorite Driver Roads?

Over the weekend, I hit the magic 1,200 mile break-in point, and decided to celebrate with a drive up Angeles Crest Highway which is practically in my back yard. As I redlined the engine and attacked each apex with abandon trying to keep pace with a Yamaha crotch-rocket, I was reminded of a quote I had read in Classic & Sports Car magazine a few months back. It was by none other than Gordon Murray, Formula One designer extraordinaire, and designer of the legendary McLaren F1 supercar. When asked: "So what would be your favourite F1 drive and driving tune?" He answered:

"I needed a sound system I could be happy with, so a guy from Kenwood came to tailor it and asked me to bring in four diverse CDs. One of them was Frankenstein by Edgar Winter which has the best stereo separation I've ever heard. The place to hear it would be the Angeles Crest Highway. This road goes from sea level to 7000 ft in about 60 miles and the longest straight is about 200 yards. It is the best road I have ever ridden in my life, but I haven't done it in a car and an F1 up there would be pheonomenal."

Here's a guy who's been to every famous race track and probably driven some of the most challenging roads in the world, and he chooses our very own Angeles Crest as without peer!

So, the question to my brethren in the region: What are your favorite driver roads, and where are they located? I need roads to explore.

Re: Favorite Driver Roads?

My current favorite is up and down on S7 to Palomar Mountain. Lots and Lots of twistys and tighter turns than anywhere. Suspension is very necessary here. You can go up one side and come down the other. Me I prefer the East grade, but both are great.

As for a sound track the G35 6MT sedan supplies the tunes. Tires, engine and exhaust with the windows rolled down. You have to do this drive during the week as the weekend traffic is awful. I just did this drive again yesterday.

My favorite is San Diego to Palm Springs through the mountain roads...15N ---> 79 E ---> 371 E ---> 74 E ...coming down the mountain is a rush...did it in my G for the second time last weekend...

south here, PCH leading all the way down to Dana Point. the roads are twisty and curvy. plus you see many Ferraris and Lamborghinis that tempt you to keep up.

all i do in the wrx is turn up the boost and hold on =)

Gordon Murray is the MAN! his McLaren F1 supercar gave me my nickname: Macky

I agree with you on Angeles Crest it is the best and one of the longest. Drove there once on a different car and I just loved it. It was about 150+ miles of twisties you gotta love that. Another one that comes into mind is the Ortega Hwy downside on that is that there are lots of "Smokies" on the by just waiting to issue you a ticket.

Re: Favorite Driver Roads?

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I forgot to mention two things.

First, Angeles Crest seems to be the unofficial public test course for a lot of car mfrs. On my way up most recently, I saw a caravan of Bimmers with mfr plates. I've also seen Lexus, Honda and others up there. I've always had a hell of a time trying to keep up with them, probably because they're driven by professional test drivers.

Second, tune-wise, I would bring an Al DiMeola CD with me to get my adrenaline pumping. His "Race with the Devil on Spanish Highway", features a blistering performance by Al on his electric guitar. If you want to listen to a short clip, go to this website and click on the MP3 sound clip of the track: http://www.guitar9.com/tourdeforce.html
