(4/10/04) A new cruise from Temecula.
Re: (4/10/04) A new cruise from Temecula.
The drive going to Idlywild was good a few traffic here and there but it was still fun. The trip going back was the another story to many cars in front. I got stuck behind this suv going down from Idlywild and I was left behind. I never caught up to the group after that so I was alone going back all the way to the freeway. We waited for you and Shawn until about 10:45 we headed out after that.

That was a fun cruise, but things kind of got unraveled after lunch. First, we lost Glenn in traffic back in Idlywild , then our lead driver (I won't say who, but you can figure it out) got in a tangle with CHP radar from the other side. The CHP could have pulled over all of us I suppose, but he yanked the lead driver who took one for the team.
I really feel bad about that, and we definitely owe you one. I wanted to stop, but felt it would only make matters worse for everyone. If nothing else, it would only confirm in the cops mind that three performance cars were screwing around on the road, while possibly issuing additional citations.
Actually, one of the most experienced group of canyon drivers put together a guide to canyon driving, which you can view here: http://www.mulhollandraceway.org/
In it, they mention if one of your drivers gets pulled over, it's best NOT to stop with him/her, but continue on, so as to not incriminate that person any further.
Anyway, I think it would be wise that next time we all bring walkie talkie radios. These are crucial for successful canyon drives. I don't know if they would have prevented our tangle with the CHP, but they definitely would have prevented Glenn from getting separated from the group back in Idlywild, as I could have radioed ahead to the lead driver to pull off and wait up. As it was, I saw Glenn get stuck behind traffic, but had no way to notify the lead driver of that. And when my radar detector started to go off, I had no way of notifying the drivers ahead of that, except for flashing my brights, which only made things look worse in front of the cop.
Although, Glenn, I think considering our incident with the CHP, you were probably better off not being with us!

Yeah as soon as I got around the suv I gunned it on the straight away. A few miles later the wife said there is cop on the side of the road so I slowed down. Sure enough one of the guys was stop at the side of the road with the cop standing next to him. It was good thing that you didn't stop according to you know who said if you 2 stopped all three of you would have gotten a ticket. I stopped at starbucks just before hitting the freeway and who do you think pulls up next to my car? I was able to talk to him after the incident he said the cop pulled him over for doing 75 on a 55. The cop gave him a break by putting 65 instead. I was trying to see if I could catch the 2 of you but you guys were gone. In anycase, he said he might not be able to go on the next run because of this incident. I was thinking of the same thing buy the freakin walkie talkies warn of dangers ahead or people are left behind.

Wow. That was too bad about the traffic ticket. That always puts a damper on things.
I have a pretty good walkie-talkie with a headset. We used to use them when I was driving my Cobra. They're invaluable for keeping a group together and for warning about dangers such as CHP traps or objects/rocks in the road. I'll bring mine with me next time so if anyone else has one they should bring theirs too...

Well, glad to hear it wasn't too nasty of a ticket. 65 in a 55 isn't too bad. I thought it would be much worse.
Good thing we didn't come across the CHP just a few minutes earlier, because then he would have had enough speed on us to lock us all up! So, it could have been much worse.
Maybe the next mod everyone should consider is a good radar detector. It's a pretty good investment for these cars. I know mine has saved my butt more times than I can count, and has more than paid for itself.

Yeah, a radar detector would be nice now wouldn't it. Or maybe a scrambler. I guess that's what I get for having the most awesome looking car in the group. Lol, just kidding. I talked with the CHP officer and he asked if I had a radar detector because I slowed down so fast when he activated his radar. He was very nice and kept commenting on how nice my car was. Even afterwards when I was getting back into my car, he was asking how much power I was pushing and all that, and loved how good my car looked. He even asked me if my wheels where 22's. I said no, they were 20's. It was fun guys, even if something bad did happen, man! My wife was so upset when I got home. Any way, we will hopefully do better next time. Talk to you all later.
