(4/10/04) A new cruise from Temecula.

Hey guys,

I was thinking that it was time for another cruise. I'm not sure where we should go, but I did like the cruise up to Julian. Of course we've gone there twice now, and to Idywild only once. Either one will be cool, or we could try some place new. Like I posted, I'm thinking the 10th would be good, that way we have time to make plans. So jump on and lets get going. Oh yeah! and the same meet up spot. Pechanga gas station at 10:00 a.m.

I'm in, Ray. I was just up at Ortega Hwy this morning. I was going to suggest that, but DAMN, traffic at Ortega is quite heavy during the weekend. I wasn't having much fun. Got stuck behind some cars and had no chance to pass . Anyway, either Idyllwild or Julian works for me.

Not this time guys. I have an SCCA race that weekend. Plus I already paid my dues at the last lunch. You guys have a great time. Maybe instead of "cruising" you could actually take those coupes and try and beat the "Wife hauling" sedan at the SCCA event. That would be very cool. It is an all day event but would be a blast for you guys.

Hey Mike that's not a bad idea, where is the SCCA event? I would love to take a crack at that thing. "Wife Hauling sedan" you make it sound like it's a bad thing....LOL!!!

Glenn,
I think he's being sarcastic with that comment in reference to his car! What it really was is a cheap attempt to say he can smoke us in his sedan!! LOL....I know you would smoke me Mike, your car is probably a little faster and you got them drivin' skills being a licensed track driver and all!
Also mike...our cars would probably be a little faster if we stopped eating at jack in the box!! ;-) (sorry for the inside joke...I saw Mike at Jack in the Box the other week!)

Re: (4/10/04) A new cruise from Temecula.

The event is at Qualcomm in San Diego. You know the home of the all mighty (not) Chargers. The stadium is at the 15 fwy and the 8 fwy. About one hour south of Temecula. The cool thing about these autocross events is even a first time novice can have a great time. I will take a look at the flyer and see when the B stock class would run. They limit the mods pretty well but BS is where teh coupes are suppose to run. I will take a look when I get home. You guys will have a blast if we do this instead of a cruise.

Shawn,

Your right I need to cut back on the Jack in the Box to keep up with you guys. Just this morning I was getting on the freeway by Pechanga and there was this sedan a little ways up in front of me and he takes off on the freeway. I catch up with the guy and I swear it was Jason, The one who joined us the last trip up to Julian with the SC coupe. He was in a loaner car from Riverside. I'm also in a loaner as my car is back in for the latest tranny. They just called and said it is ready to go, so I'm off to get the car again. Hopefully this will be the last tranny change.

Well it might very well be Jason you already know what happened to his car? PM me if you want to know.

Shawn I know Mike is toying with us with his comments. I know I'm a bit rusty on my road course driving. I haven't been on a road course since my Bob Bondurant racing class in 96. I know it will all come back once it gets going.

Anyways, Mike give us more details about the event. How much is this thing going to cost and what do we need as far as safety equipment is concerned? Let me know ASAP...thanks again.

Re: (4/10/04) A new cruise from Temecula.

The cost is $35.00 per run group unless you are a member of the national SCCA then the cost is $20.00. The cost of the national membership is $50.00. You don't need to be a member of the national SCCA but it will save you money at future events. You also need to be a member of teh San Diegio SCCA which is $40.00. So the first time out it should be around $110.00. Then the next time you run it is only the $20.00 for the run group.

You run in a certain group and then you work in another group. Working is really quite easy. You don't need to know anything, except how to run and set up cones.

As for safety equipment you will need to have a helmet that is SA90 or M2000 or newer. If you don't have a helmet they have loaners there you can use. All you need is a drivers license for a deposit.

They only issue 25 new licenses at each event so we need to get there early. Plus the stock G35 coupes run in the first run group at 9:00 am. We should get to the "Q" (qualcomm) at around 7:00 or 7:30 am. This will give us time to get registered, walk the course and go through tech. I will get there at 7:00 am. I plan on being all day. I want to run in two different groups, STX and ESP. Plus they do fun runs at the end of the day that cost like $2.00 and gives you a bit more practice.

Another thing you can do as novice drivers is have an instructor ride with you. This is very helpful for the first time. Most of you won't need to have an instructor, but they are available. The cost for an instructor is FREE. Good value. Plus as a novice they adjust your raw times so you are more competitive. You can run three events as a novice then you have to go without the novice ranking.

It should be a good time. I know it is a little steep for the first time but it does get cheaper forthe follow on events.

That would be so cool to have 5 or 6 G35' s at this event.

Yikes - $110 is pretty steep for an autocross event!
For only $20 more I could run the big track at Willow Springs for 2.5 hours of driving time with Open Track Racing, and that's WAY more fun than autocross, IMO.

I've done SCCA autocross events a few times when I lived in NY. They charged $20 for the day with SCCA membership (which I was), and that's it. There was no separate dues for the local SCCA chapter. And we would typically get 6-8 runs in for the day.

So I think I'll skip the autocross and go for the cruise in Temecula instead. I do want to autocross though - maybe I'll wait for an L.A. area one.

O.K. guys, now we need to decide on where we want to go. We could just head out to Julian again. I know another route that might give us some fun. It's a bit longer getting there, but is quite enjoyable. We would go out highway 79 south, like we did when we went to Idywild. But instead of going up to Anza, we would continue on out through Warner hotsprings. This route takes us around the other side of Palomar Mtn. Or we could just go the regular route up there. And this time I've got lunch! So, pipe in with your opinions and we will set-up for the day. Talk to you all soon, and see you on the 10th. And we will miss the one and only sedan in our group, hope you have a great time Mike.

That route past Palomar is pretty nice. The other option might be to go out the back way to Palm Springs. That's a real nice drive too...

Keep in mind spring break is still going on. We might hit tons of traffic in Palm Springs, not to mention those drunken ****'s . I actually kinda dig the Idyllwild route, especially the twisties going up Idyllwild .
