hey guys,
my car's due for an oil change soon and im going to go with synthetic. Any suggestions on what kind of oil i should use? Someone told me 10w-40 is a good way due to the heat. Is this true? any feedback would be appreciated!

I use Royal Purple and really like it... I think it's 10w50 but I will make sure and post it later today.

Oil Change to Synthetic....!

Since you're going to use quality oil make sure you use the same in an oil filter.
Mobil is a good oil filter or you could step up to a K&N....number 1008 for our
G35s!

I actually run Royal Purple 5/30 in mine ( have since 1st change )..

also another option on the filter that is a reputable company is Napa ( filters are made by WIX )..

Whatever filter you choose, NEVER EVER IN ANY LIFETIME USE FRAM oil filters... They are and worthless for anything other than a paperweight ( worked in the automotive industry for almost 10 years )...

Why is that? I've heard that same opinion many times related to cars and also in a ZRX motorcycle forum I frequent. What exactly is wrong with the Fram filters? I will honestly say that I have used my fair share of them in the past and have experienced zero problems. Is it more of an "over time" issue? I bought my G new and the it has only had synthetic in it after 7000 miles, but I have no idea what the dealer uses for a filter.

BTW...I only had the dealer change it because the first three oil changes were free since they took so long with a paint issue. This weekend will be my first driveway oil change.

The Fram oil filters are nothing more than a thin paper filter element strung together with string ( unless they've changed things, which I doubt ).. When I managed a Napa store, we had a cut apart filter display that showed the different filters with the canisters cut off & Fram was the thinnest, most cheaply made filter on the display. Of the ones that were there, the Wix was the most impressive, with the thickest filter element & most solidly built..

I also know that Fram for a while, had issues with their filters coming apart ( insides letting go & people were finding filter pieces & the string in the oil when getting an oil change )...

I used to use Fram until I started working at Napa & saw that display..

Thanks for the info. Other than synthetic, I always thought oil was oil and didn't even consider the oil filter much. I've used Mobil 1 in every car of mine except my old Jeep Cherokee and used the Mobil 1 filter when I could get it.

Lately, I've heard people raggin on Mobil 1 as not being that great anymore and that I should use Amsoil, Royal Purple, or some other boutique blend. To me, the brand of oil didn't matter as much as the frequency of which it was changed. What are your intervals for synthetic. When I lived in St. Louis, I would usually go between 5-6k miles, but out here with the heat, I think 5k would be the max for me. Sound about right?

...or should I go with BMW's recommended service interval of 15k between synthetic changes. That just convinced me to never buy another late-model used BMW unless the owner has proof that the oil was changed more frequently.

All this oil talk made me realize I haven't checked up on the OC issue in awhile so I decided to check out the TSB section to see if there was anything new. I clicked on the Oil Consumption one and realized that my car is in the VIN range. Came home, let the car cool for about a half hour and then checked the dipstick. After the initial swipe, I checked again and the level was nowhere close to the "L". I put in a half quart of 5W-30 and let it sit for about 10min, and checked again. It moved about a quarter of the way up and I put the rest which moved it safely in the middle of the dipstick. I'm going to call the dealer next week to start the testing and was wondering if anyone else has taken it to the local dealers. I have the basic mods and wonder what the dealers will say if they open my hood and see the Fujita intake and spacer. I really tend to baby my car and am meticulous on maintenance but I don't want them to get the wrong idea. I imagine Pinnacle would be the best, since they sell a lot of performance stuff. Anyone care to chime in?

diesel...

I think most dealerships are aware that we play with our toys... ( some even sell things to HELP us.. )..lol

Some of the local dealers are even sponsors on this board ( EverythingG35 is one of the dealerships here in Az... ). Pinnacle & Scottsdale are probably the more "mod-friendly" dealers.. I know that Midway was, but I'm not sure now since they moved & changed names & when I pulled into Superstition Springs, a couple of the salesmen just stopped and stared at me like WTF did you do to that car

Cali...

To answer your question about Royal Purple, I get it from my friendly neighborhood Napa Auto Parts.. ( along with my WIX filters.. )

AZ-G, thanks for the heads up. After thinking about it for awhile, I think I'm going to do my own test before I head to the dealer for OC testing. If I do suspect without a doubt that my car does have a problem, I'll probably wait towards the end of the test to take off my MREV and spacer. I mean it'll have to be removed anyway if a new long block is installed and I'd probably put on the stock airbox to make it as stock as possible during the re-break in period, which I'm told is quite awhile.

Thanx man, i'll switch to Royal Purple and see how that pans out next time. I'm using K&n oil filters, are those cool to use or should be thinking about using something else?
