Winter Wheels

I know that I am thinking far ahead but I am considering getting a set of "winter wheels" and tires for my 6MT coupe. I currently have the stock 19in rims. I am thinking about dropping down to a 17in, possibly going with some rims by Enkei. They seem reasonably priced and I think that they are decent looking enough to have on the car for a limited amount of time each year. I have also looked on Tirerack.com for all-season tires and would like to keep the price at under $125 per tire (which is a big reason why I am considering the 17 in wheels).

What are your thoughts on this and can anyone recommend any other wheels and/or tires in a similar price range (max $150 per wheel, $125 per tire)?

Thanks.

I think Dunlop winter sport M3 is one of the top winter tires in the market, as for my own setting I have 4 of those 245/45/18 running on a set of used 350Z wheels.

+1 for the Dunlap Wintersport M3s, Great winter tire.

Personally I like the 17in ASA JH3's as my winter wheels. Looks a lot like the 18in stock wheels.

+1 for the M3's. Also, go with the 17" wheels as you want more sidewall in the winter.

Winter wheels and tires are a sound investment. Don't go with all-seasons, though. If you're going through the trouble, you might as well do it right and get dedicated snow & ice tires. Call the Tire Rack and talk it over with them. They'll steer you right.

I have a '05 6MT with the OEM 19" rims. I put 17" Enkei with Blizzaks on last fall. I used the factory sizes 225F and 235R. These tires were great in the snow, always got me through. In hindsight I should have gone with a wider rim and tire for the rears and tried to match the factory offset as they had a tucked in look. Tire Rack and the local Discount Tire shop was very helpfull.
