Tire Choice

Just out of curiousity, what kind of tires do most G owners here use? Still stock? Any thoughts on the what kinda of tires to switch after the stock tires are worn out.

Re: Tire Choice

First, I'm assuming you don't have the base-model cloth G35 with 16" wheels.

If you stick with the stock size (215/55R17) then you have three choices only.. and they're all the OEM tires:
Goodyear Eagle GS-D (summer performance)
Goodyear Eagle RS-A (all-season performance)
Bridgestone Turanza EL42 (all-season touring)

The best alternative size is 235/50R17. It fits the stock rims, is nearly the same diameter, and has more tire choices available (though still not a stellar selection). I'll probably be trying out Kumho ECSTA KH11's in this size, myself. (Supposed to be better handling than the Bridgestones, and at only half the price.) If money's no object, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S is a good choice.

www.tirerack.com or www.discounttiredirect.com can list some choices for you. Second best size-wise would be 225/50R17 or 225/55R17 -- these will have some speedometer/odometer variation, though the actual tire selection is a little broader.

Or you can get aftermarket rims and go to a different wheel size. If you're trying to figure out what sizes might work, this will be a useful tool: Tire Size Calculator

Love my Pilot Sport A/Ss! Hated the stock RSAs. Night and day difference.

Re: Tire Choice

Gordee, can you give more detail how the Pilot Sport A/S vs the Goodyear RSA's compare?

Re: Tire Choice

Unfortunately, the closest size in a T1-S you can get to OEM ist 215/50R17, and it's a bit small. They say you should stick withing +/- 3% of the original diameter, and it's 3.2% too small. Might be close enough for some, not for me. Now, if you get aftermarket rims, there are some Toyo sizes that could work. I think the original question implied tires that fit on the stock rims, though.

Re: Tire Choice

RSAs: Sucks in rain, sucks in snow, adequate on dry roads.

Pilot Sport A/Ss: Great in rain, best A/S tire I've ever used in 4" snow (I still believe in winter tires though). Excellent dry road sport tire with great handling and reasonable noise. Price is the only negative factor.

The other tire I had considered is the Falken Ziex ZE512 at a reasonable price and heard good things about.
