Time for rotors and pads!
My G35 sedan is at the dealer for the 30,000 mile service.
The advisor just called and informed me that my 2nd set of
pads are down to 10% left and the original rotors need
replacing. ****!!! $161 for front pads and $489 for front
rotors. This car is costing me more than I barganed for.
Now I'm thinking about trading it.....Sob

Re: Time for rotors and pads!
Why don't you try some Stillen or AP rotors and pads or the Satisfied ceramic pads off of the Tirerack? I hope those figures you qouted include labor. If they don't, that's too much for the OEM crap. Cross drilled and slotted rotors will run $300 for the fronts and the pads are only around ~$50-$60?
Re: Time for rotors and pads!
Take it to a brake shop for a 2nd opinion on the rotors, and they might be soaking you on the pads as well. I haven't bought into the whole 'replace your rotors' thing, at least not yet.

Re: Time for rotors and pads!
Don't let them do the brake work yet... let an independent shop take a look and see what they say. And I would strongly consider getting the Satisfied Pro Ceramic pads from Tirerack, rather than going OEM again.
BTW I just crossed 20K miles and still on my original set of pads, I've been expecting to hear the squealing low life indicator sound for the last 5K miles, but nothing yet (knock on wood). Maybe I'll be the guy that gets 40K from a set of front pads.

Re: Time for rotors and pads!
I just don't have time to fu2k around with all of this! I spoke
personally with the tech about why the rotors need replacing.
He said the pads are harder than the rotors, therfore they wear
the rotors down. Said that 30,000 miles on my rotors was
more than most of the Gs get. SIGH............................

Re: Time for rotors and pads!
I think the tech is full of it. How can the pads be harder than the rotors????? Think about. What is the rotor made of? Why are your wheels full of brake dust?? The whole idea behind these brakes is that the pads are supposed to be soft, giving you better stopping power. That is why the pads produce so much dust and wear out quickly. Soft rotors?? Come on! Thin rotors, maybe. But metal is not soft. Unless they are made of gold!

When I complained to the service advisor about the rotors,
she said the rotors were "thin" because they were "high
performance brakes". THIN????? Why not THICK ????

Re: Time for rotors and pads!
I'd say get the data...Thickness of the old rotors. Thickness of the new rotors and compare them. There is also be a required minimum thickness that tells them when to replace the rotor. But I wouldn't trust them to give you honest measurements if it shows them to be wrong.
As was said before, the OEM pads are very soft. Unless the rotors are a soft mild steel I'd expect to see very little wear on the rotors.
Personally I'd just slap new pads in and call it a day. As long as they run true and dont have score marks I don't replace rotors. Been using this philosophy on at least a dozen cars....no problems ever.

I'm going to go pick up my car in a few minutes. I'm also
going to ask for my old rotors back. Do you think they will
give them back to me?

Man, $500 for front rotors is a total rip. I got the Stillen cross-drilled slotted rotors for $600, front AND back, and they're much better than the stock rotors.

Re: Time for rotors and pads!
That's a total rip-off!!!! I bought the EBC Greenstuff pads for around $80, and they are suppose to be alot better than stock. You should have gotten after market rotors, instead of paying $500 for stock. What are you going to do when they have to be replaced in the near future again? The stock pads and rotors are way over priced!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Time for rotors and pads!
If you ask for your old parts back, they must give them to you. It's law. They are your parts, after all -- the shop is not buying them from you or giving you a discount to let them keep the old parts. It prevents scams where shops claim your perfectly good rotors need replacing, charge you to replace them, then leave your old ones on the car.
