Why Do My Tires Rub?

I don't understand why my tires rub in the front of my sedan. I have no idea what the offset is, however the rims are 20x8.5 with 245/35/20 tires. They tuck nicely in the fenders with an Eibach drop. I've seen dozens of vehicles on this forum with either wider tires of with tire that seem to stick out further who apparently do not rub.

My question is this: If my tires are tucking nicely, why do they rub but others do not?

Re: Why Do My Tires Rub?

Where are they rubbing?

According to the tire size calculator I use, 225/35/20 is the theoretical ideal--but I'm assuming there's not a lot of selection in that size or in 235/35/20 so you probably chose the only tire size you could in 20.

What's the offset of your rims? Is it exactly +45?

Re: Why Do My Tires Rub?

It's probably the offset on your rims. Check to see where they are rubbing at. If they are rubbing on the top of the fender (that black plastic cover), then offset issue.

Sounds like an offset issue.

I have no idea what the offset is...

If the tires are in the fenderwells, I don't get why they would rub. They even rub top to bottom (going straight) on the freeway in the front as well.

Re: Why Do My Tires Rub?

It's a combination of the lowering springs and the offset. I have the same size tires and rims (I'm sure you already know) but my car isn't lowered. I don't recall anyone on the forum with 20's on a sedan lowered. 20's are already the same height if not taller, plus they're wider. That alone is going to bring them closer to the inside of the fender. When you lower the car, it eats up the space for wheel travel, and you get a rub.

Re: Why Do My Tires Rub?

Since you are taking time to ask all of us...

take the time to call the company you bought them from and find out what the offset is. and complain to them as to why they sold you something that will not work properly. I have seen this size tires on 20" wheels on a lowered sedan so it isn't just the size.

Well, on 10/21/03 you posted "Determining Offset".

I gave you this link: Wheel Technical Information. Did you read it?

Take the freaking wheel off and measure it, we can't do that for you!

For some reason, I think he has the same wheels I have, and he rubs(lowered) and I don't(stock).I think he has ADR Sterlings, but I could be wrong. Now I'm really curious. Gdupg35, what wheels do you have?

Re: Why Do My Tires Rub?

+38 is the offset. Is +45 optimal? These jackalls sold me the wrong offset and its been too long to exchange them. Can the wheels be modified to bring them in a little bit?

Gaklid, I have the adr sterlings like yours. What is your offset?

Re: Why Do My Tires Rub?

I heard that offsets can be altered from a rim shop.

Re: Why Do My Tires Rub?

Yeah, I believe +45 offset would of solved you're rubbing issue. In *general* it is not easily possible to 'increase' offset, but the reverse is true by simply adding spacers (going from +45 to +38 offset). That sux they told you +38 will be ok. I have been recommended by a couple of vendors that +38 offset will be fine (even when lowered) ... obviously one should never just take a vendor's word for it.

If the rubbing is severe or bugs you, you can always elect to down size you're tire size a little, so long as you maintain front to rear ratio (at the cost of speedo accuracy).

Re: Why Do My Tires Rub?

It's not severe, just a little annoying. But I guess it's o.k. since it keeps me front bottoming out going into driveway. What is the difference in a +38 and a +45 anyhow? Is that a measurement in millimeters?

Yes ... in mm, enough to make a difference in your case.

Re: Why Do My Tires Rub?

That's not even 1 centimeter. Less than 1/4"? I can't believe that would stop the rubbing problem at all.
