premature brake wear
premature brake wear
At 12,000 miles my service advisor said I need new front brakes. Well, like any other new car owner I nearly flipped. He said it was normal wear and tear, therefor it was not covered under warranty. I called INFINITI's consumer affairs and explained. They replied by saying that this was reported by several other drivers and it was due to a new european brake pad which produced more brake power but had a much shorter life. In conclusion, I was told that I should save my receipt and if enough people complained about the same issue, it would become a recall and we would all get reimbursed...... ANY SUGGESTIONS. thanks

Re: premature brake wear
here is what you should do, get yourself some ceramic brake pads and get your rotors cut and they will be better than new and your front wheels will stay nice and clean. (only if you do not have brembos, not sure if they have ceramic pads for the brembos).
Re: premature brake wear
tirerack has the satisfied pro ceramics for our car for $37, that is what i have, also raybestos has ceramics for our cars called quiet stops, and bendix has these new ceramic pads out but not sure if they have them for our cars yet but they are supposed to be real good.
Re: premature brake wear
My question is if you switch to another brake pad, other than stock, will you be covered under warranty if they do indeed recall or warrant the brakes??? A lot more people are approaching 15,000 miles. There will be a lot more complaints.
If you want to reduce the brake dust and don't mind paying for brakes yourself then yes, I would get different brakes. Not sure how many miles you will get from ceramic pads. I don't know if there are a lot of data yet.
Personally, I am going to replace my fronts with infiniti parts. At least for the first set. I need new pads and rotors and after much "discussion" I got my dealer to give me new rotors. I have to pay for the pads and labor. It works out to about half the cost of $550. After this set wears out, and if there is no resolution, I will go to aftermarket. If they do indeed cover them under warranty, that would be awesome. UCLAjeff emailed consumer affairs and he said that his brakes would be covered. See the post in this section under "Brakes and Good News? ( Pages 1 2 all )" Go figure. Good luck with your decision.

Re: premature brake wear
this whole warranty thing for the brakes seems sketchy to me, i do not see them doing it as a warranty maybe a tsb with longer lasting pads for the 1st time only. i just don't see wear parts as a warranty issue. but that is just my opinion and guess!
Re: premature brake wear
I totally agree with you on the warranty thing - that's why I didn't argue with my dealer when i called and was told that it wasn't a warrantied item. And that's why in my email to Infiniti I didn't ask them to recompense me for the brakes. I just wrote to complain about the fast wear. Just so happens they decided to give me a rebate... which I won't complain about.

I just switched to the Satisfied Pro Ceramics this past weekend, and my OEM original pads weren't severely worn like others, there was stil 5-6 mm of wear material left, after 21K miles.

Re: premature brake wear
My AWD is due end of December/early January and I've been looking into substitute pads and rotors, which I intend to swap the first week I have the car. I went through the same brake dust issue and having to replace rotors when you do pads, with my Audi A4. There are now a wider range of low dust options: EGC greenstuff (Kevlar); Axxis Ulitimate (kevlar/ceramic); Bosch (ceramic); and others. Since the issue is the front pads, you just have to do the fronts. The pads run $37-79 and EBC slotted/dimpled rotors <$186. Not much, vs. cleaning the wheels a couple of times a week.
Re: premature brake wear
for those who went with EBC or Satisfied pro ceramics, did you replace just the front pads or both front/back? there was a discussion about it, but i can't seem to find that thread.

Re: premature brake wear
Axxis Ultimates are not Axxis' low-dust pad. It's their high-performance pad and is supposed to generate more dust than their other pads. That's not to say it's more or less dust than the stock G35 pads.. it very well could be quite a bit less. Their website seems to be bogged down at the moment, or I'd post a link to the graph they have of their pads' dust levels.

Re: premature brake wear
I changed front pads only... tirerack.com for $37 + S&H. Very little dust... no discernible change in performance... no squeaking or vibration.
Worth it in my opinion. My rotors do look worn though, the middle of the disc seems much more worn than the outer and inner edges... won't know for sure until I visit my dealer this weekend. Gonna walk into the showroom, place my hand between the wheel spokes and run my fingers along both sides of the rotors.
