HKS coilovers

It just amazes me that when you spend over $1400 dollars for these you would at least get instructions you could read. I have 13 pages that I do not have a clue as to what they say. Granted, they are made in Japan. But when they are made for export, why not include instructions for that country. I have purchased many things made in Japan that have had instructions printed in German, French, Spanish, as well as English, and paid a hell of a lot less for them.

A call to HKSUSA was of no help. They do not have instructions, and I was told they have very few requests for them. I feel like I would have gotten more help going to a sushi bar.

I have now installed these on my coupe, thanks to the posts I've read here and on MY350Z. They were a lot of help. And after putting them on, I can see that I want to drop it a little further.

Does any one have any idea how much one turn of the front and rear adjustment collar changes the height of the car? I just don't want to have to keep jacking it up and taking the wheels on and off trying to figure this out.

After searching the forum it looks like FlightG35, G35mt, and bkchang79 might be the guys to ask.Would you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks

Re: HKS coilovers

Mark where your setting is at right now. Measure the distance from center of you rim to the wheel well. Jack up the car and make 1 turn, put everything back. Then drive around and measure again. That is how you do it. It is tedious process but a must. I can't give you guess estimate because my friend did it for me. Plus, each car weight differently too. I have a custom sub box on the left rear and custom amp box on the rear right. So my adjustment is all jack up. For some reason, my RR always higher than the RL. Anyway, i am going to adjust again this saturday. I will give you rough estimate number for a tein flex coilover after this weekend. I sold my hks to bkchang79 and upgrade to the tein flex.

Re: HKS coilovers

The spring rates on the HKS type Ls (nonadjustable) are 8kg/mm front, and 8kg/mm rear (448,448).

stock rates are 347 front and 419 rear, or something very close to that.

Re: HKS coilovers

that is very true...the CS seems like the best combo for our car (assuming you like the stock ride). i will probably end up with a set. i just wish they were 7 front and 8 rear, so that it would be more of an even increase in front and back. lowering the spring rate in the rear (from 7.48 to 7) scares me a bit, and i hope that it doesen't increase understeer. tein says that you can dial in plenty of stiffness with the dampening, however.

Re: HKS coilovers

having the rear softer is not too bad. Considering that you can adjust the dampers to be more stiff in the rear. Also since the tein CS is a monotube construction, its got bigger shocks than stock and can handle more than the stock. If that is still not good enough, you can always order a set of springs with higher rate. Hope that helps.

Re: HKS coilovers

that is true...

it doesen't worry me enough not to buy them. i inquired with tein about putting some 8kg/mm springs in the rear, and they said that they do not exist. the CS has 7's, the basic has 9's, and the flex has 10's (i believe). if i wanted 8's, i would have to purchase the springs and the upper adjustable perches from the HKS kit. i would try the CS kit with the 7's, and i'm sure that it will be fine, but don't rule out changing the springs if you need it stiffer.

HKS said that the springs are not a problem to get, but the availability of the perches is not too good right now.

Re: HKS coilovers

G35mt,

Thanks for the hint. Looks like we'll be doing the same thing this weekend. I am pretty satisfied with the front, but want to drop the rear a little more. After thinking about it, and looking at the rear suspension geometry, it looks like one turn won't do much. I think I'll try moving the adjuster up in 1/4" increments, and see how much that drops it. I also picked up a set of LSD camber rods. I am going to wait to put those on untill I have the drop where I want it, and am ready to get it aligned.

I just put them in on Monday, so obviously I don't have much time on them. But I can feel that it is a little firmer ride than stock, which is just what I wanted. I saw one of your posts saying your tein's at their softest setting were still stiffer than the HKS. That makes me glad I chose the HKS's. Now that I am 60, I want things to be a little more comfortable. And I really don't need to know where every bump in the road is.

Two weeks ago I put on BBS RGRs in diamond black. They are 18x8.5 and 18x9.5. I went with the 18"s because of the better ride, and also because I like more sidewall showing. Toyo T1S 245-40x18, and 275-40x18 are the tires I am running. After I get the height set to where I want it I'll post a couple of pics.

Well after this weekend we can compare notes on what we have found out about adjusting your Tein's and my HKS's.

David

Re: HKS coilovers

The tein CS will probably be better because you can adjust the dampers compare to the HKS. Also tein's coilover comes with a rubber mount as well to increase comfort. This is all on paper though, you would acutally have to compare them in real life as we do not know what the dampening rate of these coilovers are. I rode in the HKS coilover with 20" and 35 series tires(I think) and they were not too bad.
