How does offset work?

I curious what the difference is compared to stock on a +45 versus a +38 offset wheel.

Re: How does offset work?

The offset refers to the distance from the centerline of the wheel.
The difference between the stock Sedan 17" offset of 45mm and 38mm is 7mm (per side). So if you use the 38mm offset instead of the 45mm you will widen the tread (the distance between wheels) by 14mm. (about .55").

Re: How does offset work?

Let me see if I have this straight. A wheel with a .38 would sit farther IN than a stock wheel. I'm trying to determine what to do about my rubbing issue on my sedan with 20's. I'm sure there were a few sedans lowered on here that do not rub in front but can't seem to find them anymore.

(Please don't offer up suggestions like "put the stock springs on" or you can shizzle my nizzle.)

Re: How does offset work?

First, it's 38mm, not .38 anything.

Second, no, a smaller offset would push the wheel out, away from the center of the car.

That .38 could be that gun strapped to the tire!

Re: How does offset work?

Sharpen your pencil, turn on your calculator, use this backspace to offset conversion chart:

To convert from inches to mm multiply by 25.4
To convert from mm to inches divide by 25.4

That and more found here: http://www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html

Re: How does offset work?

Any advantage or harm caused by using a different offset to widen the track of the car, say 0.5" to 1.0" on my sedan, using the stock 17's ? Would this mess with the stability control system?

Re: How does offset work?

It would probably cause a bit more stress on the suspension components and some problems in long-term wear.
