Tire pressure for aftermarket tires....
Tire pressure for aftermarket tires....
I have toyo T1R proxies and I want to kno what pressure to have them at is it the same as the stock 17's that came on my car? or where can I find what they are supposed to be at?
Check the drivers door jamb for recomended pressures. Usually 32-33psi works well. In general, higher pressures firm up the sidewalls resulting in more precise cornering, but at the expense of ride comfort. If you really go too high you can cause the middle of the tread to bow out and cause premature wear and reduce the contact patch with the road in some conditions. Going lower will increase ride comfort, but as the sidewalls start to bulge out you will increase wear on the tire significantly as the sidewall will flex and heat up more on each revolution. Too low a tire pressure can also make it possible to rip the tire off the bead if you catch it on a curb or bad pothole. Probably anything that makes the TPMS happy up to around 40psi is fine for everyday use, as long as both wheels on the same 'axle' are running the same pressures and you are happy with how the car drives and handles. Different brands of tires can have dramatically different sidewall stiffness and you may have to play with pressures to get the same feel as before. Experiment to see what you like and what works best for you.
It will help a LOT if you tell us what tire size you're running. If you're running 245/35/19's, you definitely shouldn't use the door jamb technique mentioned above
....as those are for the OEM setup. Ttranks recommendations are valid if you're running a low profile tire. I run my 245/40/19's at 37 psi.
