tirerack vs discount tire

Hey, I'm trying to find new tires for my 2003 sedan. On the discount tire web site, it suggests 225/55-17 or 245/50-17 as a plus zero replacement of the OEM tire. But if you go to tirerack, it suggest 235/50-17. I'm a little confused. Can anyone help?

From what I've read, the 235/ 50-17 is the best size, if using your stock rim. I just purchased this size (Michelin Pilot Sport A/S) from Discount tire, and they are great.

Re: tirerack vs discount tire

I got the same tires from Tirerack. They are noisy but the ride is good and the grip. I really can see only slight differences in the two-pricing and range of products. The pricing is not to far off and the products are just differnet rim/tires choices. Try treadepot.com for Toyos online the pricing is good and I am dumping my Pilot A/S's for the Proxes4. The noise from the Michelins is getting to be too much.

Is the noise from the Pilot A/S's that much more than your stock tires?? Which ones did you have?

235/50R17 is a dead match for the stock diameter, so the speedometer will be accurate. 225/55R17 is only 1mph off at 60mph, and gives you a wider range of good tire choices, IMO.

I had the Bridgestone Turanza EL42s aka: Crap. The cabin noise is greater with the Michelins though. The A/S's have a bad reputation for noise and for a pronounced pull or as I have heard it put "they favor one side of the road or the other". Michelin are still a good tires the all season(A/S) has the bad reputation. I have the noise but not so much the pull but it does favor the right side of the road a bit.

Re: tirerack vs discount tire

Our tires are 26.31" in diameter. The G35 Sedan was based off a 26.5" rotating diameter. So, The 235/50/17's are 26.25", the 225/55/17's are 26.74, and the 245/50/17's are 26.65". The closest match to the recommended 26.5" diameter is the 245/55/17. I would recommend the 225/55/17's, however, because there are alot more brands and types to choose from.

Do you have a Discount Tire store where you live? I did much better just going to the store the last time I bought tires, they included mounting and balancing in the price there, plus the tire selection is a bit different as well!

khsonic03, where did you get 26.5" from?

I too am interested to see where the 26.5 number came from..

But wouldn't the computer be calibrated to the 26.3" diameter even if the design had called for 26.5?

Re: tirerack vs discount tire

FYI - discounttiredirect.com is giving a $60 instant rebate on four Michelin tires. They were about the same price delivered as TireRack before the rebate. I just ordered a set of A/Ss, 235/50/17.

Re: tirerack vs discount tire

Costco has the same $60 discount. Maybe the discount is from Michelin? They carry the A/S in that size for $212 includes shipping, handling, installation, disposal. With the $60 discount you're getting them for just under $200 each. Decent.

Re: tirerack vs discount tire

If you look on the Michelin's web site, they advertise a $40 rebate on 4 Michelin winter tires.
