painting rims
Okay, so im going to do something I've always said I'd never do. I'm going to rattle can my 18" stockers. I'm going to sand them down to the metal, primer, paint, clear coat, and wetsand them. I have a question though. My fronts are pretty curbed up, I have many deep cuts into them, what would be the best stuff to fill them before the whole painting process begins?
BTW: I'm not going black, I will be painting them a dark gunmetal color.

K Im gonna chime in on this one.
1. remove the wheel, you can have the tires removed from the wheels prior to doing them or you can leave the tires on teh wheels and work around them
2.clean the tires and wheels THOROUGHLY with a heavy duty degreaser to get all the crap off of them
3.sand with preferably a 3M fine scuff pad if the wheel if its not damaged (knicked or chunked from curbs).
4. Once you are done sanding clean the wheel with wash and wipe and a proper auto body no lint rag. then use a tacky cheese cloth to remove any remaing dust and give it one more pass with wash and wipe and a clean no lint rag to wipe off residue, now you can go ahead and mask it off with proper maskign tape and if you can access some get proper masking paper from any auto parts place. now you can go ahead and paint. if you wish you can primer but you can get away with spraying the colour only if the prep is doen right.
5.if you choose to you can clea the wheel but keep weary of flash points for base paints and clears so as to get it right for proper adhesion. after its dry make sure you buff and wax the wheels to beign tha max gloss to them, ill post pics of mine soon, ill be doing the stock 6 spoke wheels in gunmetal this week.
The No. 1 most important thing in painting is the prep work, your wheels will only look as good as the time you spend properly scuffing, cleaning, wash n wiping and genral prep work.

Holy s**t...a thread about rattle-canning rims on a G and not one reply about how "that's ghetto and doesn't belong on a car of the G's caliber"...yet. Good luck with your painting and as mentioned before, prep work is where you make your money.
Almost. I just finished painting my headlights (thanks Hai) But I will have to reopen them due to a few extra screws, forgetting to clean the inside lens, and overspray on the amber lens. Since I wont be driving the G this next week, I will begin the project.
