SPACERS: How far is to far? I am about to find out.
I'm about to see how far is too far. My new rear wheels are +38mm offset (stock is +30mm), but are 1/2" wider, which gives the wheel -6mm more protrusion than the stock 8.5" wheels. The kicker is that I'm going to try 30mm spacers
. To put it in perspective, here's what I had and what I will have:
Stock wheels w/ 20mm spacers:
wheel: +30mm offset (8.5" wide)
spacer: -20mm
total offset: +10mm - plenty of room, like I said, 25mm is fine, which would give it a +5mm total offset.
New wheels (18x9, 245/45/18 tires) w/ 30mm spacers:
wheel: +38mm offset (9" wide) - The new wheel is 1/2 inch wider (12mm), so the wheel is going to stick out 6mm further from each side, measured from the hub, so the perceived offset (where the edge of the wheel will actually rest) is only +32mm (+38mm offset - 6mm further out)
spacer: -30mm
total offset: +2mm
Is it going to rub?
We'll see. I'm still using the stock sized tires, so they will strecth a little (instead of being so rolled out around the outside edges of the wheel). I may have to roll the fenders or go with a 25mm spacer instead. I'll post pics up once I get my car back.

Well, they're on, and they look SIIIIIIIIIIICK!!
I probably won't be able to get any pics until Sunday. I serisously doubted they would work when I got the wheel mounted, but once I got it down and drove around a bit to let the suspension settle.... just wow.
No rubbing! Didn't even have to roll the fenders.
BTW, it's lowered on revised 350z springs.

18x9+8 isn't that aggressive at all, especially with a 245 tire. If you didn't have to roll the fenders, then they are still pretty sunken IMO. Should have gotter a better offset or width in the first place
could someone explain the whole offset concept to me, sorry I'm new to all this. I see 35, 40, 25 here there but have no clue what it means. I'm asking cuz I'm looking at getting some 20's non staggered for my 05 35x.

Nope, they are staggered on the coupe w/ perf package. 225/45 front tires and 245/45 rears. I've seen the rear tires mounted on the front wheels (Firestone hires the Walmart TLE rejects around here). The front tires drooping over the wheels reminded me of a beer gut hanging down over one's belt. I was doubly amazed at the apparent skill and brute force required to stretch the narrower tires around the wider wheels (225mm CAN be stretched like a rubber band onto a 8.5" wide tire!).
I didn't get a chance to take pics today. If I can get it washed I'll get pics taken sometime this week. I've just got too much stuff going on right now and pics are not on the top of my list.
Infinitihelp.com and Road and Track say they are all 18x8.

There is a difference between the front and rear wheels though, with the hub mounting surface having inserts on the front to allow for the guide bolt so the wheels don't get mixed up
+1...just open your driver's manual and it clearly states that both front and rear are 18x8.

Sorry about the crappy camera pics, but I didn't want bad information floating around. I just happened to have my stock 18x8.5 wheels sitting in my carport so I took a couple of quick pics before I left for work this morning.
As you can see, the bead is about 1/4" wide, so measuring from the insides of the beads, the rear wheels is 8.5" wide.
I also took a couple of pics of the rear wheels. As you can plainly see, they are not sunken in whatsoever (as somebody earlier stated there would be).
