Do not use these in the snow!!

Just a quick note. I got my G last November and after going back & forth I decided not too put a set of dedicated winter tires on my car, instead after much advice I opted for the Michelin pilot A/S Sports. Bear in mind I've previously owned 2 other RWD drive Bimmers with winter tires/wheels.
Well, luckily, in Chicago, so far it's been a pretty mild Winter as regards snow, and I felt comfortable spending the $1000 on my new Michelin's and not having too have buy seperate Blizzaks (I already have the steel rims from previous cars).
Man, was I wrong, we had about 2-3 inches of snow this morning, these tires offer very little traction even at 10-15mph, and on incline they offer practically zero traction.
My advice too others and myself, invest in winter/tires rims always.

Re: Do not use these in the snow!!

I saw a G35 in Boston the other day with steel rims and winter tires. I guess it depends on where you live but I wouldn't give up handling and ride in Boston for 5 or 6 months due to the 5 or 6 days a year that we have a significant amount of snow. Fortunately I can work from home and keep my car in the garage.

Re: Do not use these in the snow!!

After the 1st NY snow storm this year, I realized the pilots were dangerous. I bought the blizzak LM22's on ASA k3 (BBS) rims. It was the best $1400 I have ever spent. The tires are amazing on the snow. I also opted for a 17" snow. I'll put the 18" pilots back on in April

Re: Do not use these in the snow!!

I am in the dumbass club. I had the option to get winter rims/tires for Christmas but opted to get a watch instead...if only I could do it over. Looks like I'm stuck driving my girlfriend's A6 until this snow goes away. Be safe out there guys!!!

Re: Do not use these in the snow!!

I actually was pleasantly surprised at how competent the Pilot Sport A/Ss were in the snow, after I took my Blizzak LM-18s off last spring. We got surprised with 4" of snow on the roads and I didn't feel like switching back. They worked better than any oher A/S I'd ever driven. Backing up my on my driveway didn't go as well however!

That said, yes, I agree, there is no replacement for a true winter tire! I wouldn't drive in any winter area without them!

Snow? what is the meaning of this word called snow? jk...I know that's not the first time you heard that but being from southern california, just had to add that bit in. But imo, snow tires are worth every penny of it since a lot of freak accidents happen during snow storms...drive safely and burn rubber once summer comes along!

rbozzmanee, at least you'll know exactly what time it was when you slide off the road and into that snowdrift.

Re: Do not use these in the snow!!

Curious. What size Pilot Sport A/S did you put on the front. I assume you have the coupe w/ the 18 inch wheels?

I'm interested in the Pilot Sport A/S (live in MD, and main issue here is slush). But I see from the michelin site that the A/S doesn't come in the stock size for the front tires on the 6MT.

Also - what do you think of the tires aside from the snow.

Lots of questions! Thanks,

Steve
