changing rotations per minute

If i get a wheel/tire combo larger than stock and it affects the total rotations per minute, is is possible to get the dealer (or anyone else) to switch it in the computer so the odometer reads right?

Re: changing rotations per minute

Well, depending on how much you decide to plus size your wheel & tire combo, the difference could be very little. For instance, if you are currently riding on the stock 18s, you could swap out the front tires for 245/35 20s and the rear tires for 275/35 20s...you'd be running (according to your speedo) about 3% slower.
According to a few peeps on this board, you wanna stay w/in 3% (slower or faster). And, in the hypothetical scenario that I mentioned above, you'd actually be putting "less mileage" on your car...well, at least that's what the odometer would register.

no, I'm talking about a bigger difference. Plus, i don't want infinity to void my warranty because i messed with the odo. I just wanted some more info before i approached them about it. Thanks

What setup are you thinking of going with to give you a bigger difference? If you went with 20s and 40 series your going to rub the fenders. I don't think you can get a bigger difference than 20s with 35 series.

Yup. That set up will be a notable difference in speedo/tach/odometer readings. I guess in order to have that set up, you'd end up dropping some $$$ (beyond the wheels & tires) to get the proper gears, etc.

Well, whatever you decide to do, good luck with it. Keep us posted!!

Re: changing rotations per minute

i tried asking my dealer. The guy said no, no way of doing that would ever be available from infinity because even different tires could screw up the VDSC. Whatever, I just e-mailed Grubbs infinity. Maybe they'll give me a real answer.

Re: changing rotations per minute

That makes sense. The VDC computer may be calibrated based on number of wheel rotations from the sensors, and adjusting the gearing for the speedometer/odometer may not adjust the VDC computer. If that's true, it would be possible to confuse the VDC into thinking that all wheels were slipping, and I doubt it could cope well.

Or maybe that's just their excuse. I imagine they really don't want to mess with it due to regulations on tampering with odometers.

Re: changing rotations per minute

I'm sure it would screw with the VDSC a bit, but wider tires would help stop the VDSC from being needed. Anyway, i found a product that may work. There was some not so promising data on the page though. I'm waiting on a response from them.

Re: changing rotations per minute

Why not just go with a wider set that's the same diameter (or close to it.. +/- 3%) as the stock wheels?

Re: changing rotations per minute

I probably will, but the ones I'm looking at have an overall smaller diameter (with bigger wheels)... and I can get them for about $700 less than new.

Re: changing rotations per minute

I got word from that guy... he said that the product would work for me, but I would have to make sure to isolate the speedo wire and make sure not to tap the wires going to the ABS or VDSC because changing speed data to them will cause problems. He also said that my odo should not be affected because engine speed should not be affected... this leads me to believe that he dosn't quite know what he's talking about. I'll check with a shop that deals with this kind of stuff like Grubbs Infinity instructed me to do.
