17" Tires/Autocross
17" Tires/Autocross
Anyone running any 17s in other than the stock 215/55/17 size?
I'm really wondering if the guy running the 245/45/17 Falken Azenis is having any issues whatsoever? I thought he was crazy at first, but after looking at the specs, he's only cheating slightly with the 7" rim as they say the tires will work on 7.5"~9". Plus the OD is favorable compared to the 225/45/17, 25.7 vs.24.9. 25.7 is pretty close to the stock tire at 26.3, so if the tires are staying on, probably a good choice...
Deciding whether or not I want to autocross or not and if so, what class, I want to jump to R tires, but that gets pricy as I'd "have to" buy up some sweet 18s or 19s for the street. I didn't want to be in street tires with the falken 225/45/17 because I thought they were too small in diameter for normal street use (might look goofy, throw off the speedometer, etc.). But the 245/45/17 sounds like the way to fly, wide for the track, PDC (pretty damn close) to the stock tires for street use...
What pressures are you running for autocross on the 245s? (I used to run high 40s in the del Sol on Falkens...)

Re: 17" Tires/Autocross
Call me crazy, but I'm not the only one. :^ )
I have another friend in Austin that is also running with the Azenis 245/45/17s on the stock sport rims. Neither one of us have experienced any problems with them. I've been running about 38 lbs. in the rears and 35 in the front, but keep in mind my suspension is not stock.
I also have a set of 255/45/17 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's that I run on a 17x8 set of Enkei's. These are my daily tires. I only use the Azenis for autocross now.

How do you find your daily setup of the 17x8 with 255/45/17 tires? I was thinking of going that route. Seems like there are a lot more tire choices in that size. According to the tire calculator thing it's only 1% too fast.

Re: 17" Tires/Autocross
I love it. It really makes the car look beefier IMO. It rides great too. I actually used to autocross with this setup before I got the Falkens. The F1's are the best tires I've ever had in the rain too. I would highly recommend these to anyone that has to deal with a lot of wet roads.

Re: 17" Tires/Autocross
Glad to hear no problems.
I'm thinking using them for autocross AND as daily driver tires. Why'd you get the 17x8s/255s for the street? Why not use the falkens for the street also?

Re: 17" Tires/Autocross
I'm in the same, same exact situation as you LOL.... I want new tires for the Spring that are Wider, Lower Profile, All-Season but still for racing or sporty.. I was leaning too the 225/45-17 Falken Ziex's but then saw on Tire Rack that they had them in 245/45-17 so I was like DAMMM I want those... Then I came across this thread and saw that people were actually using the 245/45-17 without problems too... I still dont know what to do, I want Wide, Low Profile and Sport with the use during the winter which is the Flaken Ziex's!!!! But, its a leased car, what is the chance of soemthing getting messed up, or tire popping or falling off??? Should I get them???? Also Lead Foot did it throw anything off on your car Speedo, or anything else and also we are talking about the stock sport 17's here!! Thanks iLLG

Re: 17" Tires/Autocross
I'd say there is ZERO reason to choose the 245/45/17 Falken Azenis UNLESS you plan to autocross, it's commonly accepted that the Azenis is the best tire out there for autocross with a wear index above 140 (the SCCA definition of a street tire, at least in Arizona).
That is the only reason I'm considering it.
I don't see a reason to go away from the stock tires for street only use. But just my opinion...
What are you running now? Why do you want something else? The Falkens are cheap, but they wear out very fast (i auto crossed once a month and drove fairly aggressively on the street in my del sol and never got over 10k miles on a set of Falken Azenis)
For street use, the main reason to go with a 245/45/17 over a 225/45/17 is the outside diameter, the 245 is much closer to the stock tire which will keep the speedo closer to accurate. The lower outside diameter of a 225 will though the speedo off but give you more low end and it might look a little funny (more tire to fender gap)

Re: 17" Tires/Autocross
No, I don't want the Falken Azenis tires. I was looking at the all season Ziex's and I wanted new ones because im 7,000 into my car and the stock tires are wearing down already cause of my speeding, donuts, burnouts etc.. I want to get new wide and low profile tires that are even better than stock and that I can use for all season and for the last 2 years ill have the car then put the stocks back on when I bring my car in, feel me
Anyway the Falken Ziex tires come in 225/45-17 and 245/45-17, I shoudl go with the 245's??? I want them but will they be good?

Re: 17" Tires/Autocross
I put the Goodyear F1 GSD3's on yesterday in the 225/55/17 size. It is about 2% off based on revs/mile. Drove in snow and slush yesteray and had no problems. ride quality is better than stock, noise is the same as stock (extra sidewall (~0.2 inches helps some) I haven't had a chance to try em on dry roads yet.
One thing I liked about the 225/55 versus the 255/45 is that I didn't have to buy new rims.

Re: 17" Tires/Autocross
Thanks very much!
Those are the 245s?!?!?
They look more than fine to me, I thought they they would look way 'worse', stick out way more...
If I autocross the car and stick with street tires, done deal, those are my tires!
Thanks Again!

P.S. Did you have the black rocker panels and bottom of the rear bumper and front bumber painted?
