Winter time

OK, its getting time for the lucky weather we been getting in NY to start dropping. This is the first time i will be buying pure winter tires, so i have some questions. I have an 03 coupe, and i THINK i have the 18" rims(yea i should know by now). I want to put pure winter tires on, because id rather be careful than to have all season and get caught. My question is, what kind does anyone recommend? I read some posts prior to, but got mixed reviews on a couple tires. Also, should i order them online or just go pick them up? Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure i get the best i can. I am not looking to spend a ton of money, so the best for the price is what i guess ill shoot for. Thanks in advance, and and NY'ers who wnana chime in would help out a TON.

I use Dunlop winter sport m3's and I am pleased with them. Another popular choice is Blizzaks. Both "performance" winter tires.

Ahhh! A fellow Long Islander!!! Where abouts on the Island are you from? What size tires did you guys buy, and where did you get them? It seems the dunlop M3's are what im going to go with. Just got to figure out the size.

Just go to Tirerack.com and check out what they have available. That will give you an idea of what fits, and what are good choices, as well as what's in stock.

I have run the Dunlop Winter Sport M3's on my '04 Coupe and have been very pleased with them.

I personally run michelin arctic alpin PA2's which are rated well on tirerack. I purchased and extra set of 17's since tires are cheaper on those sizes, and allows for easy swapping. If you are planning on installing winter tires on your stock wheels, do you have other wheels/tires for the warm months?

Yea, i am lookin at the Dunlop Winter Sport M3but i dont know if i wanna spend that much on tires for one season. I wont have the car by next winter, so i dont know if i can justify spending it. As far as other rims, yea, i have sevas s star's wrapped in generals. Love that setup! haha

You can always sell the wheels and tires next year to recover some of the cost. The real question to ask is can you justify the cost of a major accident because you decided to cheap out on getting winter tires, and tried to drive around a RWD car with summer tires and put the car in a ditch?

Mabe this isnt an option, but have you looked into getting a beater car? I was going to get set of winter wheels/tires, but i decided to just get a beater for 400$. I know it will be more in the end with the cost or registration and insurance, but it was a better option for me. I am fron Long Island also.

Yea, i have a truck. Its more for the days its not going to snow, or might come down with very little precipitation. Its mainly going to be used within a mile of my house, and ill take the truck for the days its going to be real rough. Just want to get something on so i can take the rims off and store them.

so then what is the next best? We gave youa couple of options of what are good winter tires, choose whichever one is cheapest and buy those. If you are looking for someone to say "buy this bargain winter tire, its just as good!" I think you'll still be waiting next spring.

The Hankook Icebear W300 or iPike W409 are also pretty damn good performance winter tires. I ran the Icebears for 2 winters and had great success with them up here in New Hampshire. I just put the iPike W409's on the rears for this season. You can get them from Discounttiredirect dot com for less than the Dunlops. If you read the reviews you will find that they are well liked. Good luck.

Tirerack has the Aplin on sale for 142 (I think). I bought a set last week to replace my current winter set (same tire and size 225x55x17). I've used this tire for SEVERAL winters and I drive many miles. It's a fantastic tire. I use an enkie RPM2 for the winter.
