17" Tires

I was just at my local tire shop plugging a nail hole in my RR tire (Goodyear). Only 2k miles & I had a flat.
Well I got to talking to the owner about replacements for my '04 sedan. I told him from what I have read, the only replacement is the Mitchelin Pilots. I'm not sure if that is true, because he offered my a set of Bridgestone H rated tires 215R55/17 for $100 each if I buy at least 2.
I have never heard this tire mentioned here. Is this worth a consideration or are the crap? I do have a few months left on my stock tires so I can wait a bit.
Any feedback is appreciated.

Bridgestone makes about 100 different tires. Which one are you referring to?

H rated tries are good for 130 MPH if that has any bearing on your decision.

Take a look at these. I read/hear nothing but good things about them. You have lots of options. Just need to read up a bit more.

Good luck

Try www.treadepot.com and look at Toyos. The price is quite good.

Re: 17" Tires

The Bridgestones are probably the EL42s, which are the other all-season tires that come on the G35 sedans. There are only three tires that are made as 215/55/17: Goodyear RSA and GSD (summer) and the EL42's. The RSAs are terrible tires and the EL42 only slightly better. The RSA are called high perf. A/S and the EL42 standard touring A/S. Neither is a really high performance tire. The other tires mentioned (Goodyear F-1; Toyos) don't come in a size that's within 1% of the 215/55/17 circumference. The best replacement fit is a 235/50/17. I replaced my RSAs at 204 miles with Michelin Pilot Sport A/Ss (235/50/17) and they're terrific and while there not cheap (about $200 each), the should last 35-40,000 miles.

Re: 17" Tires

Thanks Marty for the reply. I am considering the Pilots but have one more question:
Since these are not the original size, will they fit my stock rims & do I have to buy 4 or will 2 at a time work?

The Turanza's come V-rated. Getting an H-rated version would be cheaper, as long as you're not driving the car aggressively.

235/50R17 will fit the stock rims just fine. I wouldn't recommend doing 2 at a time, due to having different tire compounds front and rear.. it'll affect handling some. However, the diameters are close and the ABS/VDC systems shouldn't be confused by it.

Re: 17" Tires

Ryoken is right on. The Michelin recommends the stock wheel size for these tires. Putting only two tires on will work, in the sense that they're the same circumference, but the cars handling may be weird. I'd say replace all for and enjoy the difference.

Re: 17" Tires

One other note.. if you do decide to do just 2 tires to start with, put the new tires on the rear axle.

If you have new tires in front (better traction) and old tires in back (worse traction) you create a difference that exaggerates the car's tendency to oversteer (fishtail) in emergency situations.
