Well I'm sure that all of you probably get this a lot but I am looking at 20" R1 hype black wheels for my 2006 white G35 coupe. I am a little nervous about upgrading from 19" to 20" and the effects it might have on my car. Even though I bought the car and continue to pay out of my pocket for it my Dad has a lot to say about what I can and can't do to it. He says that the rims would void the warranty of THE CAR and not just the warranty on tires and rims because it affects my suspension. He also says it messes with the frame. All I need is a little advice and maybe some persuasion from anyone of you . Also if any of you have 20's could you let me know how they perform and if they rub.

I have TSW wheels that are also 8.5 in the front and 10 in the back lowered on TEIN basics, they don't rub at all. In fact I'm considering getting spacers because the front wheels are not wide enough.

Your dad's just telling you what every parent tells their kids so they don't spend all of their incomes on cars. Standard Infiniti warranty doesn't cover wheels and tires anyway (unless you got the wheel & tire warranty package). The only affect is 20" wheels will be heavier, and tires will cost more.

Getting new shoes for your coupe is something you'll probably do sooner or later. I waited a while to get mine, wish I had got it in the beginning because it makes the coupe look so much better!

 

yea my dad has found an excuse for nearly everything i have already done to the car. so how much did u lower ur g. and thanks for the advice.

 

Lowered mine about 1.5" at first, found it too much trouble driving over bumps, and raised it up by 0.5". Roughly 1.5 finger gap between the wheel and the fender.

 

yea that seems like a pretty big drop. im assuming it rides pretty rough especially on 20's

 

tell your dad i work at a body shop i have been doing auto body for 7 years now. new wheels will have nothing to do with the unibody there is not frame like a old rust bucket. wheels will have nothing to do with suspension. you are making the wheel bigger and the tire smaller. it is around the same size. the only thing that will affect your suspension is when you lower your car. if yu just get springs you will need new struts within 2 years or so. if you get coilovers it comes with a new strut. i have 350z s techs springs. love them. i have a little camber to fit them because i have not had time to role my rear quarter lip. tell your pop that new wheels will not hurt a thing.

 

I am rollin 20's and my car is lowderd 1.7 in on all 4 corners and with my 285 rear tire and I dont' rub you cant' even fit you finger between the tire and fender in the rear and it rides perfect.....

20's sets the G off.....and you can get some for a very reasonable price....just do it....

man...thanks guys for all the help. sorry i havent been able to respond earlier today but i just had my wisdom teeth pulled so im a little messed up from the pain pills lol. So its lookin pretty positive on the rims now that he has read some of yalls advice. THANKS. but my parents just recently hyrdoplained and wrecked their nissan armada. not totaled but $13K dollars in damage so im gonna have to post pone my purchase. oh well. but if any of you have advice on suspension and handling i would love to know. im pretty new at this so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 

Dropping the car with larger wheels did make my ride rougher, but it also handles better allowing me to stick to and feel the road. Only get complaints from passengers (mainly girls) every once in a while, most people don't mind it at all. Another possible issue is that road noise might increase at freeway speeds.

I would recommend getting tires that doesn't stretch too much for your wheels. I'm currently running 245/35R20 front & 275/30R20 rear and is always worried about the tire pressure and how it looks too flat. Planning to switch to 255/35R20 & 285/30R20 when the current set wears out.

yea i have the sport tuned suspension that comes with the car... so its already a bit rough. im not too worried about the ruggedness of the ride as much as my dad is lol... personally all my girlfriends that ride in it are more worried on how they look inside it rather than the ride lol. i planned on running the 245/35R20 front & 275/30R20 rear but seein how u said ur worried about tire pressure ill probably rock the 255/35R20 & 285/30R20. im also interested in brembos...do u think that those will have an affect also on the fit?

 

yes, some rims will or will not clear brembos.

be careful when deciding how much to drop your car, if you live in an area where the roads are a bit bumpy, then i'd be weary of dropping it too low. I'm dropped on G s-techs which is .9" drop in rear, 1.1" in front and I scrape on some speed bumps. Also be prepared to drop money on a camber kit if you drop your car more than an inch i think. you don't have to but it prevents camber wear

I live in boise, ID and we have some of the worst roads ever and I never hit anything and why would he not want camber it's sexy you can't tuck a tire with out it....
