diff between aftermarket and stock rims
diff between aftermarket and stock rims
Im in the market for some new wheels for my car to spice up the look. I currently have the stock wheels that are made by rays. My biggest concern and all I hear about is people denting or bending their rims due to small pot holes or any regular incidents your stock rims would encounter but still ok. Are after market rims not strong or anything? They seem to be much more delicate than stock rims which can stand pot holes. Of course the brand and quality of the aftermarket rims would matter as well but lets ignore that fact for now
ignore the quality:money factor? you can buy 4 sets of cast wheels totaling to 4 gs or you can spend 4 gs upfront and grab some forged quality wheels that will hold up just like your stocks
Oem wheels tend to last thru warranty unless abused [curb hits]. Important to annually test wheels to make sure they meet oem lateral and radial and balance specifications.
Very few low cost aftermarket wheels [cast aluminum] even meet oem specs brand new.
A good wheel will need less than 5-7 grams per side without tire to achieve a perfect 0/0 gram balance as measured on an accurate spin balancer!
Many tire shops cheat by using the course setting which rounds things in 10 gram increments [5-6 would show zero]..............Careful and check machine settings!
Over 18 years I have used 3 sets of oem wheels on my Q [every 100k they begin to exceed oem specs, luckily I was smart enough to buy 2 set [dealer takeoffs for pennies 10 years ago.
The passenger side wheels get the most abuse due to rough side of road so actually 2 wheels can sometimes surfice.
