Noob wheel balancing questions

I have a very low mileage G, needs it's first tire rotate/balance. Currently it has the balance weights stuck on to the inside of the wheels on the inside of the spokes.

My last 2 cars had this as well but after some balancing, tire installs etc. I ended up with weights hammered onto the outside lip of the wheels. After a few more times and the weights getting moved, you end up with the outside lip damaged and looking like crap. Not to mention the weights look bad too.

So, my question is are weights placed inside or outside for a reason? Can I insist they are not hammered onto the perimiter lip? Do I have to go to certain tire places capable of the stick on weights?

Can someone please explain to me or point me to info if it is already out there?

There could be several reasons...alloy vs steelies. In most cases but not all, alloy wheels will not have the certain lip where the weights will sit properly on the edges.

Also, i'm not sure how advance the wheel balancers are nowadays, this is just my guess but.... I think it's capable of dectecting of where the off-balance location is, whether it's in the inner or outer part of the rim. IMO, I don't think it really matters as long as you have the correct location(circumference wise) and the correct amount of weight.

Some auto part store carries the adhesive or stick-on wheel weights. If not, ebay, jc whitney, online retailers have them.

All my wheels have the weights inside, behind the spokes, but right against the outside edge. I have no weights visible from the outside, unless you look hard, in between the spokes. They look like they're adhered with some sort of sticky stuff. I have been buying my tires and having my wheels balanced by Discount Tire.

I wouldn't allow them to mount the weights on the outside. It's never come up though.

That's what I have currently, but in the past I seem to end up with the edge mounted weights that F up the wheels. I'm not sure if the glue on ones are factory only, or if I just didn't watch carefully. But I don't know enough about balancing. Was hoping someone here knew and could explain the details. BTW I have the OEM 17"s which are absolutely mint so I'm trying to keep them that way.
