Another Tire Decision thread

Over the past weekend, I am so frustrated in deciding a tire for my sedan with OEM wheels. I scrubbed my rear right wheels last week and partly shaved a little piece of the tire.

I am deciding on size and tire choice:
215/50 R17 Toyo Proxies T1S, Yokohama AVS ES!00
225/55 R17 F1 GS-D3, S03
235/45 R17 F1 GS-D3, Pilot sport, S03

Can somebody give me some opinions and maybe a simple review on durability, ride, performance, size?

Re: Another Tire Decision thread

why not consider the 225/50 GS-D3's?

Good compromise between 225/55 and 235/45 as far as aspect ratio goes and a damn close to stock speedo

Because Goodyear doesn't make the Eagle F1 GS-D3 in 225/50-17.

go with the S03's...their tread life is about 15k but they are awesome performance tires.

Re: Another Tire Decision thread

I kinda liked the S03 but I can justify the price with the 15k miles. It is just too expensive for me.

I tried to search for 225/50 R17 too but theres nothing good in that size.

Re: Another Tire Decision thread

ok, my bad. They used to, when I bought my tires. I had to choose between the 225/50 and the 225/55

I just checked again and they aren't on there any more. I feel stupid

Re: Another Tire Decision thread

Have you considered the Pilot Sport A/S? It's available in many of these sizes we're talking about, including 225/50 and 235/50. It's a bit expensive, but it's supposed to provide dry handling nearly as good as summer tires, wet and snow traction that are better than other all-seasons, and be quiet and last awhile. We have a few members that use this tire. It's probably the best tire from a "does everything" standpoint.

Re: Another Tire Decision thread

I thought about it before but I am going to get a set of snow shoes around october anyways so there is no point getting all season tires to sacrifice the sportiness for snow traction. What I need is a good set of summer tires with both good dry and wet traction and performance.

I have Blizzaks for winter rubber. I also have the Pilot Sport A/Ss for the summer. Excellent dry pavement grip as well as in rain! Not much compromise, especially when compared with some other brands/designs of dedicated High-Performance summer tires. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Re: Another Tire Decision thread

Well.. this time next year I'll be happy to tell you how well the GS-D3's last. They're definately a night & day difference over the Turanzas in handling. You just seemed like you were concerned with tread life and ride comfort, too. The GS-D3's don't seem to be any rougher than the Turanzas in daily use, from what I can tell. Of course, like I say, I was hell on the Turanzas, and they only made it 11k miles. I wanted a replacement tire that was good in dry performance, and screw everything else. So it was these or the S-03's. The ride comfort is a nice perk, though.

And down here in San Diego, the GS-D3's provide all the snow traction I'll ever need.

Re: Another Tire Decision thread

How about the sidewall flex that I hear some people talking about? I know it has a good review but its on different cars.

My friend keeps on suggesting its more of a straight line tire and not a good cornering tire. This is one of the reason I want to avoid the thick sidewall to avoid sidewall flex during cornering. Even tirerack suggest I don't use 45 sidewall but I am so frustrated between the choices. So much decisions to make.

Re: Another Tire Decision thread

I've only taken it to one autocross so far.. definately corners better than the Turanzas. I haven't had any other tires on this car, so I don't know, personally, how it compares to other max-performance summer tires. The TireRack reviews on the GS-D3 v. S-03 v. Pilot Sport show that they're all pretty close to each other.

Re: Another Tire Decision thread

I kinda narrow it down to 2 choices.
215/50 R17 Proxies T1S
225/55 R17 F1 GS-D3

still thinking about which way I should go though.

Re: Another Tire Decision thread

OK guys
I narrow it down to 2 new choices
235/45 R17 Goodyear F1 GS-D3 or Toyo Proxies T1S

I need some review on both tires. I heard the Toyo has really good performance but doesnt have too much of a good ride while the Goodyear has good dry and wet traction and a good ride but there is some sidewall flex. Can anyone comment on this?
