235 is the width portion of the tire size.

It seems I'm not asking my question clearly:

1) Will 235/55/17's fit on the 04 sedan? YES or NO

2) Will 225/60/17's fit on the 04 sedan? YES or NO

3) Will 215/60/17's fit on the 04 sedan? YES or NO

No rubbing is what matters to me, the mph being off is inconsequential at this time. I would like to go taller, not wider. The car has not been lowered or altered in any way. Does anyone know or has anyone tried these options w/o problems in their car?

Thanks

if u go with 235/50/17 like me today, that's as close to the original diameter as u can get 0.2% off if u check tire size calculator http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I don't think many people have attempted these combinations. Most people attempt to keep their speed-o close to accurate in attempting tire changes in my experience. The most common choice is 215/55 17 for winters if people are changing their rims over or they go stock.

In looking at the tire calculator I think that 215/60/17's 235/55/17's should both fit with out rubbing, but I have not tried them and cannot guarantee your fitment . I think you might be pushing it going to the 225/60/17's. That being said... I don't know for sure.

Why do you want such a huge sidewall on the tire (taller not wider)?
