Best tires for the price? Help!?
Best tires for the price? Help!?
Hey guys, I'm a newb to this forum, but thought I could get some help for my 05 G35 (18" rims). I'm looking at getting new tires and need some advice. I only plan on keeping my car for another year or so (2 years max) and only drive about 8k kms/year (4971 miles). To be honest, I don't want to spend a lot of cash and just want a set of tires that won't need replacing after 15k.
I was looking at getting a set of Kumho Ecsta SPT's (http://www.1010tires.com/tire.asp?ti...sta+SPT+(KU31))
Any advice?
Also, I'm Canadian, so if anyone knows of a good place to buy a good set of tires for a G in Canada (to avoid duty), please let me know! Thanks!

hmmm... never heard of general exclaim
Has anyone had any experience with the tires mentioned already? I'm a little hesitant on purchasing a set before I hear how they perform on a G coupe (because of all the frequent tire wear issues people have noted).

tons of people in the beamer world use them for daily driven tires. They're on the low end of the high performance tire curve. I've heard of people getting increadable mileage out of them. Many people would put them on their M3's. I plan on getting a G at some point, I used to have an E46 M3 and decided to sell it and downgrade to get something with fewer miles. So i'd say go for it, if they were putting them on BMW's, they I wouldn't imagine why they wouldn't do fine on a G. If you care to research, head on over to e46fanatics.com and seach.
I have these on my car and they seem to ride very nicely. They're a softer ride than the OEM Michilin Pilotsports and they are half the price. I don't drive my car too aggressively on the streets, so I can't really say how they handle at the limit, but they drive great for everyday driving and cruising and they grip a lot better in the cold than the PilotSports. My PilotSports offered no grip whatsoever once temps got below 35 degrees. Neither tire is rated for winter weather though, but my car usually sees about half a month per year of 25-35 degree driving before the first snowstorm of the year hits.. then she sleeps for the rest of the year in storage.
I also did not have an issues with flatspotting on my Falkens when I parked the car last winter for over 4 months straight with the tire pressure @ 40 PSI.

I have used the General Exclaim's before on my old 3000GT and they seemed to perform pretty well. They were on the car when I bought it so im not sure of the price but I think they are fairly cheap..
I got the Kumho Ecsta SPT's for my 06 G35 (19"). I drove almost 2,000 miles on them until I installed winter tires/wheels on my car a few weeks ago. They perform well for the price. I felt that the Kumho performance in the rain was much better than the OEM Bridgestones.
The OEM Bridgestones only seemed superior when cornering at 25+ mph (e.g. entering/exiting highway ramps). Other than that, dry performance was similar.

Awesome, thanks for the advice guys.
I'm stuck between the General's and the Kumho's, but now I'm also receiving a deal for Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's. It's a really good price, but need some opinions. Thoughts?

Make sure you have the person who is giving you this "deal" on the PS2's calculate out the whole cost, including installation. Some tire places are real shady like that... and might try to say they'll give you a deal on the tires, and then when you're not paying attention, they try to jack up the installation and tire disposal fees to make up for the difference. Before you know it, you're basically back to paying full price for the tires. Just watch out, because many tire dealers are EXTREMELY shady.
Actually, it turns out my rims aren't 19's like I originally thought, they're 18's. So scratch that Michelin deal. It was for a practically new set off craigslist for $600 cdn.
Now that I'm shopping for 18's, does anyone recommend tire sizes other than the stock 225/45 and 245/45? I've read that 245/40 and 245/45 is a good combo, but I'm not sure why. Or is it best to leave it the way it is?
