How seriously does salt (from snow) damage the wheels finishing?

I was curious
I read sporadic postings about how salt sometimes eat away at the finishing.
Is this a real problem or its just over exaggerated?
I would think manufacturers would have tested their finishing.
New wheels also have warranty for their finishing too.
Is this a problem more for cheap wheels or a certain kind of coating wheels?

Thanks

It is true.
Salt will cause a problem with any type of metal that is not protected by some form of finish or coating.

On one of my G35s I had winter alloys that had a machined lip. After one winter (even with wax on top) the lip got pitted in numerous spots.
The OEM alloys generally do okay since they are usually a painted finish, but even my 17 OEM alloys on my 07X that I used only for winter started to bubble up in spots after 3 winters of use. I rinse them off regularly to to get rid of the salt.
