Increasing your offset by shaving backpadding?

Has anybody ever heard of this technique? Basically if your wheels sit too far outside your fender, you can increase your offset to bring the wheels back in. For example, I was cursed with a 19x10 +17 offset, so if I was to shave 5mm off the back padding (the surface that mounts to your hub), it would give me the 5mm I need for a +22 offset. Still a low offset, but enough to look decent.

Re: Increasing your offset by shaving backpadding?

Actually, I have. A friend of mine was selling a set of 18's he had purchased for his NSX. He actually only received the rear two and were waiting on the fronts. He decided he wanted something else so I considered them for my 240sx. When test fitting the rear we found the wheel sat slightly too far outside. He sells wheels for a living and he looked at the wheel and guesstimated there may be enough material that can be removed without compromising the integrity. It has been done before, but you'll want to get some opinions on whther or not it is safe with that particular wheel. In this case, he paid particular attention to the material that would be left under the lug seats.

I have had this done several times on my race cars and street cars. Use common sense and all will go well. Have it done by a good machine shop a it should be okay. You do have to use good judgement regarding the amount you take off.

i used to work for a reputable wheel company a while back. we used to shave the backpad often for custom orders. but before doing so, u should consult the company that produced the wheels and see if its ok or not.
