My Volks are ruined!!!

I recently had my coupe washed and the individual drying off the car sprayed some sh*t on my driver side front rim that is eating away the clearcoat on the lip. The lip is now discolored and has a purple-green hue to it. I know I should be washing the car myself but I am pretty busy and this place USED to be very trustworthy with my baby. They said they will pay to repair it, but my question to my fellow g35 drivers is can it even be repaired? Is that something that can be polished out, and if so will repolishing the lip dull it in the future. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Since the wheels are clearcoated it'll nver look the same as the others unless you buy a brand new lip from Volks.

I don't think the polished lip is coated. The chemical they sprayed may have some kind of acid for mag/alloy wheels. Usually polishing with mothers aluminum polish and some elbow grease will bring the shine back.

Re: My Volks are ruined!!!

the lip is clear coated.. and the bad thing about volks "being that i sell volks at my shop" is that u cant order just a new hoop ur gonna have to to order a new wheel.. kinda sucks considering 20" GTC's r kinda hefty in price.. but look on the bright side.. if their gonna pay for it , ur in good shape.. plus in the future if you ever mess up a "spoke" in the front u can take off the spoke on the "old damaged" wheels and replace it..

Re: My Volks are ruined!!!

I had the same thing happen to me I was trying out a new wheel cleaner (Black Magic DO NOT BUY THIS) I sprayed them on my wheel cleaned them off and left a hazey purple-greenish hue on all the wheels, my wheels arent clearcoated so I just had to polish all the wheels again. But it should fixable if its just the lip they'll just strip the clearcoat and polish the lip and re-clearcoat it again

Eh, I've been using the Black Magic wheel cleaners on my stock rims.... and they seem to work fine. Should I stop using these?

Sukairain and Neffster I would give Meguiars Wheel Cleaner a try its the best stuff I ever used, if anyone ever saw what the black magic wheel cleaner did to my wheels you would never touch it again maybe since the stock wheels are painted its fine but dont put it on a polished wheel EVER

Fellow Forum Members,
I HIGHLY recommend using only car wash shampoo and wax on your wheels (preferably Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo and NXT Wax). In between washes and waxes, wipe them down at least three times a week with a soft cloth for the brake dust - - the wax will make them that much easier to keep clean.

My stock 18s are 2 years old, and look as good (if not better) than the day I brought the Coupe home. I'm waiting on my Volks Challenges - - and they'll get the same, exact treatment!!!

04 FX35: Ivory/Touring/Spt/20% Tint & Chromies

Re: My Volks are ruined!!!

pretty much wat everyone else said. if you are looking to repair, you'll have to take the rim apart (if its multi piece) and send the outer rim out and get it stripped and polished. if you send it to a reputable place, the finish will come out like new, if not better. we've done this a few times to non-clearcoated rims, and the results were awesome. it should be the same thing since the rims are the same material, just a layer of clearcoat that should be able to be taken off. most cleaners and polishes are safe for polished rims w/o clearcoat. the clearcoat is similar to that of a paint finish. do not use mother's or any type of polish on clearcoated rims because of the abrasives in them, they will put tiny scratches on the finish which will be enhanced by the polished finish. soap and water will be the choice with clearcoated rims, just make sure you dry them completely, then go over it with a clean dry cloth to bring out the gleam. if you want to take the extra step, car wax will do the clearcoat justice as long as it doesn't have harsh abrasives in it and will provide extra protection against the elements, plus make it easier to clean in the future like Gee Man said.

Profile4 (or anyone for that matter),

So Zaino is good for high polished and clear coated lips and wheel wax is good for the center painted part? Can I just use the Zaino on the whole wheel?

TIA

Re: My Volks are ruined!!!

My understanding is that most dedicated wheel cleaners have chemicals (usually acidic) that are specifically formulated to remove heated brake dust residue that can "bake" onto the wheel's finish... if you leave the brake dust there too long you get what they call "galvanic corrosion".

If you clean the wheels regularly with, say, mild soap and water, then you shouldn't have to use a (harsh) dedicated wheel cleaner. The trick is to clean it off regularly/ relatively quickly, otherwise it's a lot harder for soap and water break the chemical bond between the brake dust and the finish.

Check out www.premiumautocare.com for there wheel cleaner. It is ph balanced at 7.0. so it will not violently react to your clear coat. All there products are very good. Paul Azinger (pro golfer) where's there hat on tour he likes there products so well. He swears buy it and so do I. I love there detail gloss enhancer spray, ultimate paint protection, tire gel, the list goes on and on
