Winter Tire Suggestions

Okay, here is the deal. I need snow tires, 215/55/17 for my sedan RWD. I have been looking at the Continental Extremewintercontact specifically, because i have been hearing good things about them.

Here is the thing though, I go to school in Fargo ND and commute back to Minneapolis probably once a month on the interstate doing 75+mph for 3-3.5 hours at a time, plus various trips to Bismark, Grand Forks, etc.

I need good performance though. Theres quite a bit of snow in Fargo during the winters, and it tends to drift into deep spots, so snow traction is critical. But, i also dont want to burn up the tires on my higher speed interstate driving.

The other option would be a good all season tire like the Goodyear Assurance or Continental Contitract DWS, but i'd really like to get a dedicated snow tire that i can transfer over when i get my new car.

Trying not to spend a lot here, and thats why i like the continentals. Right around $500 for the 4 tires (love shopping for 17s vs 19s, which mine are shot...)

So what are you guys running in the snow and are you doing interstate driving or just buzzing around town? If i lived at home, i'd just toss the snow tires on and call it a day, but they need to work on the interstate.

Thanks for any info.

Been happy over the years with the Dunlop WinterSports (M3 and now 3D). Very good dry performance for a snow tire and solid snow/ice traction. Also reasonably quiet on the highway.

You know my answer Janik.

Dedicated winter tires all the way, Nokias, Dunlops, Blizzaks, they all make great winter rubber.

Nice choice. I think I'm going to grab the General Arctics.

When do you guys usually throw them on? When the temp is <45?

My friend told me 40 degrees, so around then. I have no idea when it gets that cold though... probably gonna run the 19s another month, then run the 17s until it hits 40 then swap out my crap cooper all seasons that are currently on them and put the snows on.

Looks good Janik
I usually put mine on when the temps get below 50F, in November

My first set of winter tires, im really excited. I figure, even though this will be my last winter with my 05 G, i can still keep these tires and put them on my new car. I decided that a snow tire was just the way to go to make things so much simpler.

I usually switch right before Thanksgiving or thereabouts, when the temps hover at or below 45 consistently and put back on my summer rubber in mid-March.
