How important is this number when considering a tire purchase? For example is a tire with a load rating of 98 better than a tire rated at a 93? Looking up the definition of load rating it seems pretty self-explanatory, the higher the number the higher load carrying capability it has. A 98 is rated at 1653# and a 93 is rated at 1433#.

Since our cars come in at ~ 3500 pounds what benefit would I see by spending more on a tire with a higher load rating? I'm guessing none but was curious.

 

No real benefits. Besides, the higher the rating usually the tire is heavier. Or you can get them if you pack a lot of stuff in your car.

 

Does this mean heavier/higher load rated tires adds more resistance/protection on rims from potholes? Just curious.
