stock 18" Pilots in Winter OK??

Folks,

Anyone know if these are ok in cold weather. Not much snow in Raleigh, NC. But temps drop to freezing (maybe 10 below 0 at most). Will the stock 18" Pilots turn into hockey pucks or is it safe in cold weather?

Thanks!

(>>> All those people with winter setups, do the new rims come with pressure sensors compatible with the G?)

I would really recommend getting real winter tires. The pilot sports are almost like summer tires.

Unless you like risking your life to the fullest extent, I would suggest you get winter tires/rims. If it snows even a half an inch, you won't be going anywhere.

Re: stock 18" Pilots in Winter OK??

Well, i have used the Pilots for 2 winters in the snowy NE. I have had another car to drive when it really snowed out, but I drove it a few times in the slippery stuff. It wasn't fun, but it was doable. I think it also depends on how much experience you have with a RWD car. I never got stuck and only had one situation where I wish I had snow tires on the car....

I also drove the car in -8* weather with no problems on the highway at 65 mph. I slowed from my normal 80 when I saw the temp start dropping as I went in to the mountains (it was 10* in the valley, -8* in the mountains).

The Pilots ARE summer tires, so I would suggest all seasons if this in the ONLY car you have to drive in the winter. Better safe then sorry (though my actions may not portray that!!)

Okay, thanks for tip - that's enough encouragement for me. Winter setup it is.

I will try to read through all the posts on winter setups. Haven't decided yet on tires or rims+tires. I suppose it's easiest just to get a whole set of winter rims+tires - seems like the stock setup is such a waste (at least for tires - why couldn't they put all-season tires as stock - oh well)...

Re: stock 18" Pilots in Winter OK??

Hello Folks,

I found these at a local DiscountTire. Can I use my stock 18" rims for all 4 tires with the same spec (so that rotation becomes feasible):

PIRELLI PZERO SYSTEM
245/45ZR-18 96Y DIR (41690)

What's the disadvantage of increasing the tire width in the front? Any thoughts in keeping the same width all around? Will this work with the stock rim widths (8" and 9", right?)

Thanks! Darn forgot to check - can anyone confirm that these are all-season??? I will try to call in to find out and post unless some1 knows off hand.

The answer is a big fat NO! My Pilot Sports can't even drive straight at 10mph with slightest slush on the road. 18" winter tires are both expensive and inpractical. I would recommend some 17" wheels with winter tires. (or buy a $1500 beater for the winter)
