Problems with Koni Shock Install on G35 Coupe

I recently had a set of Koni shocks installed on my G35 Coupe at a Nissan Dealer. When I got home, I found that they had inverted the front spring perch on the shock and the front of the car was two inches higher than normal. I went back to the dealership and they corrected the problem. Hopefully there will be no problems down the road with driving about 10 miles in that state.

That was about two weeks ago. In driving the car, I still felt that there was something wrong. I dug up the front spring and shock instructions for the G35 Coupe and read them over. I found that the front coil springs are a different diameter from the top as compared to the bottom. The narrower end with the 'distinction mark' on the coil spring should be on the bottom and the wider end of the coil spring should be at the top. I checked my car and guess what, the mechanic inverted the coil spring. ie. the narrower end of the coil spring was at the top and the wider end of the spring was at the bottom.

I just cannot believe that anything that could go wrong with a shock install did go wrong. These are certified Nissan Master Mechanics. I wonder how they get certified or is it that they just don't care?

I am going to call the Dealership in the morning and see what they will say and do. Can anyone tell me if there will be no problems with the spring being inverted for such a short period of time?

dang, that really sucks! Do you have any aftermarket shops in your area
that do installs? You might be better off that way. reversing the perch... spring
up side down...where the hell are they getting their education?

About your springs being inverted, I highly doubt that they caused any
damage to them. are those the stock springs or aftermarket? The factory strut tops can take
a lot of beating (usually they last the entire service of the vehicle)....so a couple
hundred miles here and there will probably not hurt it.

The springs are the stock springs. Thanks kenchan, I feel a little better after reading your post. I just hope the Dealer fixes the problem with the springs and not screw anything else up.

As someone that has had Koni shocks on a previous vehicle, where I self installed them. I can tell you that Koni's instruction's are very poor. While in my application, it made very little differance in ride height how you oriented the spring perches, as far as your installing dealer goes. I would have thought they would have put them on both way's and noticed the differance. But again, Koni instruction's are very poor. Perhaps you could post a pic of the shock assembly with a clear view of the spring perches so we can have a pic showing the perches installed correctly.

ORACLE I think you're going to be okay. Glad someone read the instructions, huh?

Do I dare ask which dealer in town that was? I can presume but I'd rather know which one to be sure.

I went to the Dealer today and had them check the spring orientation. It looks like the spring was correctly installed and the service manual was miss leading . We checked another G35 coupe and it also had the paint mark on the spring at the top of the strut. This has taught me that you cannot believe everything you read and that even the service manuals are not always correct and are at times confusing.

Thanks for the info. As Gsedan said, Koni instructions suck.

Guess you're okay then?

Everything seems fine. Originally I was looking around underneath because I was experiencing more suspension noise than what I thought I had before the Koni install. It maybe that since the shocks are stiffer, that I will experience more noise??? It could also be related to the installation of the Hotchkiss swaybars... I may end up checking the end links...

Are you creaking over bumps or thunking?
